Chronic diseases are the major cause of death and disability worldwide. In recent years, they have increased, reaching epidemic levels.1 In Europe, a great influence from obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer diseases has been observed, and it is estimated that they collectively account for 86% of premature mortality.2 The burden of disease in Spain follows the worldwide trends over the previous years: cardiovascular and circulatory diseases, diabetes, neoplasms, and neurologic disorders are some of the leading causes of mortality and disability.
