Napoleon and orthopedic casts Did you know that currently used crutches date back to the era of the civil war? Did you know that Napoleon’s famously controversial victory over the Russians in the Battle of Borodino in 1812 helped a French doctor develop an early version of orthopedic casts? Or that the first modern, “pay” hospital was opened in London only in 1842 with eight single-bed rooms?
