Sleep disorder in patients receiving hemodialysis

Patients receiving hemodialysis complain frequently about sleep disorder. In order to assess the sleep disorder in these patients, we conducted in collaboration with the Nephrology Service Ibn Rochd CHU, a survey using Morpheus Network questionnaire, which covered 90 patients receiving the dialysis stage. The questionnaires have been collected over one year period between 2013 and 2014. Out of the 90 patients, 49% have sleep disorder, in which women predominated . The total population's average age was 70 year old. The average time between the start of the dialysis and the sleep disorder onset is 11 years. The reported sleep disorder are of insomnia type in all patients, excessive sleepiness or access sleep in 94% of the cases, shifted sleep in 92% of the cases, enuresis in 19% of the cases and heavy legs syndrome in 17% of the cases. Moreover, 60% of the patients with heavy leg syndrome have iron deficiency anemia and 40% of them are under antidepressant treatment. These patients reported organic manifestations during sleep, represented in excessive movement (39%), respiratory stoppage (3%), pain in sleep (22%), and repeated shocks during their sleep (11%). They also report regular nightmares (6%), choke feeling (8%), snoring or noisy breathing while sleeping (17%) and morning headaches (22%). 58% of the patients report gastroesophageal reflux and 14% noted a decreased libido.
