Association of Myocardial Injury and Outcomes in Patients hospitalized with COVID-19

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has emerged as a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally.(1) Although, primarily a respiratory virus, symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection can be non-specific. Cardiovascular manifestations of COVID-19 are poorly understood but can include cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction (MI), arrhythmias, and myocarditis.(2) Myocardial injury in the form of troponin elevation is frequently seen in the clinical setting in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and can range from demand ischemia to overt MI.(3) Through this analysis, we sought to assess the impact of myocardial injury on in-hospital outcomes in patients admitted with COVID-19 using a nationally representative database of the United States population.
