Implementation of a Novel Approach to Treating Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Using Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation: Overcoming the Challenges of Educating Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Nurses on the Nuances of Caring for Non-Oncology Transplant Recipients

In March of 2023, our program began implementing autologous stem cell therapy for the indication of MS. The program utilized the expertise of a neurological physician group that is well versed in MS patient care and understood the efficacy of stem cell therapy for slowing the demyelination process of the disease. A risk assessment evaluating the education of the BMT nurses was conducted which revealed a need for further education on the disease process, care, and management of patients with MS. As the first patient was scheduled in summer of 2023, the identified educational needs had to be expedited to ensure that approximately 50 BMT nurses were adequately educated.
