Patients With Lvads Had Worse Overall Survival After Simultaneous Heart-kidney Transplant As Compared To Patients Who Did Not Undergo Lvad Implantation Prior To Transplant

Many patients with advanced heart failure will develop chronic kidney disease (CKD) from cardiorenal syndrome, and some will progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring dialysis. Several studies have demonstrated that patients with severe CKD or ESRD at the time of isolated orthotopic heart transplant (iOHT) have worse outcomes than those with normal renal function and in response, the incidence of simultaneous heart-kidney transplantation (sHKT) has increased. While several smaller studies suggest that sHKT is a safe option in patients with LVADs and renal dysfunction, recent literature demonstrated that these patients had worse short and long-term outcomes after sHKT when compared to outcomes after iOHT alone.
