Recommended and Observed Statin Use among U.S. Adults – National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2011-2018

Heart disease and stroke are the first and fifth leading causes of death in the United States.1 A leading risk factor for both conditions, high blood cholesterol levels are positively associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).2-5 The 2013 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) Guideline on the Treatment of Blood Cholesterol to Reduce Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Risk in Adults (2013 Cholesterol Guideline) eliminated specific LDL-c treatment targets, shifted treatment focus to use of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins), identified four patient groups most likely to benefit from statin use, and emphasized the importance of patient-clinician risk discussions for primary ASCVD prevention.
