Changing climate may affect animal-to-human disease transfer
(University of Queensland) Climate change could affect occurrences of diseases like bird-flu and Ebola, with environmental factors playing a larger role than previously understood in animal-to-human disease transfer.Researchers from The University of Queensland and Swansea University have been looking at how different environments provide opportunities for animal-to-human diseases -- known as zoonotic diseases -- to interact with and infect new host species, including humans. USDA Research and Forest Service Slated for Cuts in FY 2020
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is slated to receive $20.8 billion in FY 2020, $3.6 billion below FY 2019. The proposed budget for research, education, and economics at USDA is 8.2 percent below the FY 2019 level. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), which partners with extramural academic institutions to conduct research, education, and extension activities, would receive $1.4 billion (-5 percent) in FY 2020. Within NIFA, the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) would receive funding at $500 million (+20 percent) for competitive extramural research grants. Lower priority programs su...

Most microbes in hummingbird feeders do not pose health hazard
(University of California - Davis) A study led by the University of California, Davis, is one of the first to address the potential for sugar water from hummingbird feeders to act as a vector for avian -- or even zoonotic -- pathogens. It found that the majority of microbes growing in feeders do not likely pose a significant health hazard to birds or humans. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

Taking a Multisectoral, One Health Approach: A Tripartite Guide to Addressing Zoonotic Diseases in Countries
Source: World Health Organization (WHO). Published: 3/2019. This 166-page guide, co-published with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), updates and expands the 2008 Guide to cover prevention, preparedness, detection, and response to zoonotic threats at the animal-human-environment interface in all countries and regions, and to include examples of best practices and options based on the experiences of countries. Although focused on zoonotic diseases, this guide is flexible enough to cover other health threats at the human-animal-environment interf...

Zoonoses: Antimicrobial resistance shows no signs of slowing down
(European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)) Data released today by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reveal that antimicrobials used to treat diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans, such as campylobacteriosis and salmonellosis, are becoming less effective. Antigenic and Genetic Characteristics of Zoonotic Influenza Viruses and Development of Candidate Vaccine Viruses for Pandemic Preparedness
Source: World Health Organization (WHO). Published: 2/21/2019. This 10-page document summarizes the genetic and antigenic characteristics of recent zoonotic influenza viruses and related viruses circulating in animals that are relevant to influenza candidate vaccine virus updates. Zoonotic influenza viruses continue to be identified and evolve both genetically and antigenically, leading to the need for additional candidate vaccine viruses for pandemic preparedness purposes. Metagenomic sequencing at the epicenter of the Nigeria 2018 Lassa fever outbreak
The 2018 Nigerian Lassa fever season saw the largest ever recorded upsurge of cases, raising concerns over the emergence of a strain with increased transmission rate. To understand the molecular epidemiology of this upsurge, we performed, for the first time at the epicenter of an unfolding outbreak, metagenomic nanopore sequencing directly from patient samples, an approach dictated by the highly variable genome of the target pathogen. Genomic data and phylogenetic reconstructions were communicated immediately to Nigerian authorities and the World Health Organization to inform the public health response. Real-time analysis ...
