Data Sharing in Public Health Emergencies: Analysis of Barriers and Enablers from an Outbreak Response Serspective (SHARE)
Source: Wellcome Trust. Published: 12/2018. This 48-page case study focuses on outbreaks of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), as a new emerging zoonotic pathogen without a licensed intervention, to provide an in-depth understanding of barriers and enablers to data sharing to such zoonotic emerging infectious disease (EID) outbreaks. It provides an overview of critical lessons learned from past experiences and supports the development of sustainable data sharing practices for future research and infectious disease outbreak preparedness. Danger in the desert
(Deutsches Primatenzentrum (DPZ)/German Primate Center) A team of scientists headed by Stefan P ö hlmann, Hannah Kleine-Weber and Markus Hoffmann from the German Primate Center - Leibniz Institute for Primate Research in G ö ttingen investigated MERS-virus mutations and found that certain mutations made the virus more resistant against the human immune system. The analysis of mutations is essential for predicting the risk of a pandemic. Moreover, the MERS virus may serve as a blueprint for other zoonotic viruses that can be transmitted from animals to humans. (Source: EurekAlert! - Infectious and Emerging Diseases)
