Are You Being Constrained by an Unrecognized Emotion?
We know it’s important to be connected to our feelings. When feelings go underground, they don’t disappear. They operate unconsciously, perhaps contributing to our anxiety or depression — or just a vague sense of discontent. Oftentimes, we can’t put our finger on what’s causing us to feel disconnected, isolated, or less alive. There is one human emotion in particular that often hides out, living in a half-dormant state that reduces our joie de vivre (joy of living) and is prone to being activated when conditions arise that activate it. This is the human emotion of shame. Of all our human emotions, per...

Knowledge translation: beyond the peer reviewed papers
Oh the risks and pitfalls of trying to get research into clinical practice! There’s an often-cited figure estimating it takes around 17 years for a new practice to enter routine clinical care (Dilling, Swensen, Hoover, Dankbar, Donahoe-Anshus, Murad & Mueller, 2013) – that’s a long time! There are many reasons for this delay: Inertia – change is hard!Systems – often support the status quo, may not fund new or innovative practicePeer pressure – to keep on doing the same as everyone elseQuestioning whether the benefits are truly thereBusy clinical practice making it difficult to...

Exploding Your Mindset Box
Some of the biggest traps in self-development are mindset traps, usually because they’re invisible to us. We get ourselves into a mindset box but can’t see the walls. What if the mindset box you’re in doesn’t contain any solutions to your biggest problems? What if those answers exist only outside the box? A common symptom of this trap is when you think you’ve tried just about everything and still aren’t getting results in a particular area. This is often true of financial, career, relationship, and health challenges. What you’ve really done is tried many solutions that are...

12 New Immigration Ideas for the 21st Century
Alex Nowrasteh andDavid J. BierToday, Cato released a new white paper entitled “12 New Immigration Ideas for the 21st Century. ” Edited by myself and my colleague David J. Bier, the essays in this white paper are written by academics, policy analysts, advocates, and smart people from outside of the Beltway who each propose a new and innovative way to reform the U.S. immigration system. Most of the essay contributors participated in a workshop where their ideas were analyzed by other experts, immigration attorneys, and people who have worked on immigration reform on Capitol Hill. Our intent from the works...

Committing to the Stretch
One thing I love about blogging is that by writing about many aspects of personal growth, I improve and deepen my understanding of those aspects. Writing helps me glean fresh insights connect the dots in new ways. This has been especially true of workshops and courses. Initially such projects felt daunting, but eventually I got the hang of them. Now a big part of my motivation for selecting such projects is the rich personal gains I’ll make in my ability to understand and apply the material. The next major deep dive I want to create is a course on creative productivity called Amplify. I expect to start working ...

" Strike Two " : A Pediatrician's " Dance " with Alan Levine/Ballad Health - And WHY We Need Federal Medical Whistle-blower Protection For ALL Healthcare " Workers " NOW
This is the story of how government failed me as a Pediatrician - for the second time.  The saddest thing of all is that there is a " Strike Three " .  Nobody cares about Pediatrics - or Pediatricians.  They haven ' t for a very long time.  This is a long post.  Don ' t whine about it.  Read it. CARE that somebody trying to stand up for your children lived it - and not for the first time.Twenty-two years ago, the morally-bankrupt executives of my now fiscally-bankrupt hometown hospital (in Asheboro, North Carolina) railroaded me out of town . . . after I intervened in a nursery case being...

Want to Stem the Rising Mental Health Crisis? Look Beyond the Usual Suspects for Help
As the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic effects spread, concerns about mental health impacts continue to grow. For example, we worry for health and human services professionals whose duties involve higher risk for trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress. Reports of global increases in family violence also suggest that there will be many violence victims and witnesses in need of mental health support. Add to this the potential effects of social isolation, health-related anxiety, and that these mental health problems may persist and worsen long after society goes back to “normal.” And this is all happening as the Uni...

Sgt. Harris shares his crisis team’s typical protocol during one of these calls and describes what they do when things don’t go as planned. How does the team handle psychosis? Medical City, U.S.A.: Medgadget Visits Texas Medical Center
There’s a saying that “everything is bigger than Texas,” and healthcare is no exception. Located just south of downtown Houston in between the historic Hermann Park and Rice University, Texas Medical Center (TMC) consists of 54 medical institutions spread throughout its expansive campus, making it the largest medical complex and the 8th largest business district in the world. It is, quite practically, a medical city. Medgadget had the opportunity to spend a few days last month visiting TMC as well as a couple Houston universities. We were well aware that TMC pioneered many medical innovations, such as ...

Creative Productivity
One goal that’s been on my Someday / Maybe list for many years is to write a novel (or even multiple novels). I’ve done lots of nonfiction writing, so I think it would be interesting to explore fiction writing. I like the idea of delving deeper into my imagination and connecting dots through a different medium. I also love to turn personal goals into social goals by inviting people to join in such experiences. This aligns well with the next deep dive I have planned, which is on the topic of creative productivity, tentatively called Amplify. I’d like to start creating this course during the summer. I have a p...
