This study further demonstrates that AMD is not a single condition or an isolated disease, but is often a signal of systemic malfunction which could benefit from targeted medical evaluation in addition to localized eye care." Microglia in the Aging Brain, Both Protective and Harmful https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2022/07/microglia-in-the-aging-brain-both-protective-and-harmful/ A growing body of evidence implicates the changing behavior of microglia in the aging of the brain and onset of neurodegeneration. Microglia are analogous to macrophages, innate immune cells unique to the central nervous sys...

Is It Time For The Australasian Institute Of Digital Health To Really Be More Than A Conference Organiser?
The objective would be to eventually have an organisation that had an academic as well as a managerial board and which maybe developed a journal to highlight Australian research and progress in digital health. To my eye these activities are rather under done and could be ramped up to develop a more balanced organisation into the future.I am sure some will think all is OK as it is, or that the AIDH is irrelevant anyway or that I am just an elderly out-of-touch curmudgeon but I do feel improvement and more balance is possible, and Australian Digital Health would be better for it. Does anyone have any views?David.  (Sour...

Launching the Longevity Prize
The Longevity Prize initiative is, at least initially, a collaboration between VitaDAO, Foresight Institute, and the Methuselah Foundation. They are trying a different approach to the proven format of research prizes, a step by step progression in which smaller prizes are won in the process of defining concrete goals in medicine and biotechnology that will later receive larger prizes. It is an interesting and novel idea, like much of what orbits VitaDAO. The only way to see how well any novel idea works is to give it a try! The longevity ecosystem is growing rapidly. But the problem is vast and we're running out o...

Biopsychological pain management is not enough
I recently read a preprint of an editorial for Pain, the IASP journal. It was written by Prof Michael Nicholas, and the title reads “The biopsychosocial model of pain 40 years on: time for a reappraisal?” The paper outlines when and how pain became conceptualised within a biopsychosocial framework by the pioneers of interprofessional pain management: John Loeser (1982) and Gordon Waddell (1984). Nicholas points out the arguments against a biopsychosocial model with some people considering that despite it being a “holistic” framework, it often gets applied in a biomedical and psychological way. In ot...

How to Choose Commitment-Worthy Creative Projects
When considering which new projects to implement, I look at a number of factors, especially if it’s a creative project like a new course or workshop: Heart Is this a path with a heart? Is it likely to be fun, interesting, and growth-oriented? Does this idea have enough energy to generate sustainable motivation all the way through to completion? Or could this bog down into a demotivating slog that leaves me feeling drained and depleted? Opportunity Is this a genuine opportunity? Is there meaningful demand for it? If it’s an idea for serving others in some way, is there clear enough evidence that ...

My Intentions for CGC Year 6
Yesterday was the last day of our 5th year in Conscious Growth Club. Today we’re beginning our 6th year together. You still have about 2.5 more days if you want to join us since the deadline for opting in is May 3rd. I thought I’d take a moment to share some thoughts and intentions for Year 6. Some of these are personal. Some are club-related. And some are a mix of both. One thing I love about CGC is that it’s so supportive on the personal side, so even though I facilitate the group, I also engage with it much like any other member. Fitness One intention for this new CGC year is to refine my f...

In this study, we tested the therapeutic potential of VHHASC and a newly generated VHH against murine ASC (VHHmASC) to target ASC specks in vitro and in vivo. We show that pre-incubation of extracellular ASC specks with VHHASC abrogated their inflammatory functions in vitro. Recombinant VHHASC rapidly disassembled pre-formed ASC specks and thus inhibited their ability to seed the nucleation of soluble ASC. Notably, VHHASC required prior cytosolic access to prevent inflammasome activation within cells, but it was effective against extracellular ASC specks released following caspase-1-dependent loss of membrane integrity, an...

All 30 Guild Course Lessons Are Complete
Wow… what a journey the Guild course has been! We delivered the whole experience live April 1-30, in the form of a daily Zoom call – around 3 hours per day on average. It was such a beautiful and rewarding journey into connection, intimacy, social alignment, and more. All 30 lessons were recorded, and they’re fully published now. We’re keeping the course available for anyone who wants to go through the recorded version. The live version included breakout rooms for group discussions, which aren’t included with the recordings, but I’d say the recorded versions are still around 60 hours of m...

The 2022 Longevity Summer Camp for People Who Want to Work in the Longevity Industry
The Less Death non-profit is founded by folk from the longevity community, with advisors that include a few of the long-standing SENS Research Foundation scientists and some of the early entrepreneurs in the longevity industry. This group is organizing a four day summer camp in June for people who want to work in the growing longevity industry. It is a good thing to make it easier to enter this part of the biotech industry, either as entrepreneurs or employees at early stage biotech companies. The focus is on education, but building a network of connections with those already involved in the industry is the real benefit to...

The Merits of Late Life Suppression of Growth Hormone Signaling
The longest lived mice are those in which growth hormone or growth hormone receptor are knocked out, a gain of 70% or so in life span. They exhibit dwarfism, like the human population with the analogous inherited Laron syndrome, caused by a loss-of-function mutation in growth hormone receptor. The Laron syndrome population may be somewhat more resistant to some age-related diseases, that data still to be rigorously confirmed, but do not appear to live any longer than the rest of us. Studies on growth hormone metabolism and longevity conducted in mice should be read with that in mind, particularly when used to advocate ther...
