The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
June 09, 2022 Edition-----The Russian war on Ukraine is now well over 100 days old. The destruction and deaths are just awful and the world is being seriously re-shaped. Where this ends is unknowable but unlikely to be good.In the US we are seeing almost daily mass shootings and no-one seems to know what to do. Just pathetic. In the UK the hangover is slowly lifting after the 4 day royal celebration. In OZ we are having an energy crisis which we hope we will find solutions for soon!-----Major Issues.------https://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/economics/australias-labor-government-faces-a-whole-new-economic-ball-game/news...

From “Eminence-based” to Evidence-based cognitive & mental healthcare: Time for quality and accountability
Welcome to a new edition of SharpBrains’ e‑newsletter, featuring timely brain & mental health news, two excellent new books and a few fun brain teasers. #1. From “Eminence-based” to Evidence-based mental healthcare: Time to focus on quality and accountability “The real challenge is not finding a therapist, it’s finding a therapist who knows how to provide the treatments that work. In the early 2000s, Myrna Weissman was trying to understand why so few therapists use scientifically based treatments. She found that over 60 percent of professional schools of psychology and master’s level social work prog...

Wednesday Bible Study: Construction Contract
The next couple of chapters describe the construction of the first temple. Most scholars think it probably existed, one reason being that it ' s destruction, which is described later, happened within perhaps a generation of whoever wrote this. However, as I have noted earlier, archaeological excavation on the Temple Mount is not possible, so it can ' t be confirmed by physical evidence. (Archaeological finds which some have claimed to be evidence for the temple have either turned out to be fakes, or are of dubious meaning.) In any case, it was highly unlikely to have been as grand as is described here, and we don ' t ...

Separating brain-healthy wheat from chaff is becoming more urgent by the day
A) New video game company aims to develop therapeutic games (The Verge): Video game-based tools can help with conditions like depression and ADHD, research shows. DeepWell Digital Therapeutics plans to build on those studies. “There was an amazing amount of science that had already been done,” Douglas says. “We started to recognize exactly how therapeutic these games already were.” Often, a game used as a therapy would be designed as a therapy first, with fun or engaging gameplay elements layered on top, he says. But DeepWell wants developers to build games in the most engaging way possible — and ...

Tighten your belts
I refer you to this extensive, comprehensive, and apprehensive Kos diary by Bilboteach. I discussed this with a friend the other day and I ' m not sure he took me seriously. A consequence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine will be a global food shortage. Ukraine is a major grain exporter, and Russia is a major exporter of nitrogen fertilizer on which, unfortunately, the global food supply is completely dependent. Higher fuel costs will also increase the cost of food.Futures prices for basic food commodities -- wheat, maze, soybeans -- have soared already. It seems inevitable that there will be famine in poor countrie...

Dorie Greenspan ’s Apple Cake ala’ Marie-Hélène
I found the recipe for this delicious Apple Cake on Food52, which features an adorable and informative video of Samantha Seneviratne and her little boy making a modified version of the original recipe, which Dorie Greenspan originally shared on Epicurious. Dorie credits her friend Marie-Hélène Brunet-Lhoste for the recipe, but truth be told, Dorie created this recipe herself, having been given only a few vague instructions from Marie-Hélène. This cake is mostly apples with a little sweet batter (and a little rum…) holding them together. It’s easy to make, bakes up beautifully, and, reports Dorie, tastes...

Wednesday Bible Study: Pretzel Logic
Chapter 17 features David ' s spy Hushai giving what is purported to be bad advice to Absalom, which God causes Absalom to accept because God has evidently decided to give the kingdom back to David. Well okay but Ahithophel ' s advice is to attack with 12,000 men, whereas Hushai ' s advice is to attack with the entire army, which is evidently much larger. Why an attack with a larger force will fail, whereas an attack with a smaller force will succeed, is kind of hard to understand.Anyway Ahithophel thinks that Hushai ' s plan will fail, so he kills himself. There ' s a lot of detail about who is put in charge of what and t...

How to choose a probiotic
The world of commercial probiotics is evolving rapidly as the science of the microbiome continues to unfold. Unfortunately, the current crop of commercial probiotics provide limited benefits, as they are generally concocted in a haphazard fashion. Most current commercial probiotics are a slap-dash collection of microbes, each of which is believed to be beneficial or at least not harmful. They provide limited benefits that include helping suppress the proliferation (but not usually eradicating) unhealthy species such as Klebsiella and Staphylococcus, encourage production of intestinal mucus and strengthening the intestinal i...

: Sunday Sermonette: Not all is fair it seems in war
Chapter four starts off with some factoids about the ancestry of a couple of minor characters that seem irrelevant to us. The Tanakh is very interested in genealogy as clan and tribe are the organizing principle of the society. Then there is an interpolated bit about Jonathan ' s son Mephibosheth which is a complete non-sequitur. The translators have put it in parentheses. Then we get the murder of Ish-Bosheth, which the perpetrators think will please David as David has been at war with him. On the contrary, David has them killed.David kills people all the time, by the thousands. It is perfectly fine for him to do that if ...

poem
LatchkeyI was a latchkey kid.I was self reliant.I wasn ’t afraid of the emptiness of home.We ’d barge through the foyer shouting, bickering, Flip on the TV, fill the clock ticking silence with sound.Noise as a way of forgetting you're alone.I could do what I wantedI liked being alone I could run and shout,Boss my little sisters Pound the basketball against the cement,Chuck a tennis ball against a cinder block wall That had a strike zone chalked in the middle,At least until mom got homeAnd had to take her nap.I preferred being alone.I didn ’t wear the key around my neckDangling from a red yar...
