Gaby Barajas has been miserable with morning sickness during her pregnancy. At times, she couldn’t keep food or drink down. “It was to that point that I was so desperate just to feel better already,” says Gaby. 8 Nutrients You May Be Lacking
Fighting back feelings of fatigue, irritability, or depression? Before you diagnose yourself with a chronic condition, take a look at your diet. Sometimes, common medical symptoms can signal a nutritional deficiency.  In the United States, 1 in 10 people have at least one nutritional deficiency, says Christine Pfeiffer, PhD, a research chemist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Center for Environmental Health. That figure, based on nutrition indicators in blood and urine tests, comes from theCDC’s latest nutrition report, published in 2012. While the survey doesn't capture...

All Men Should Avoid This Diet…
Most doctors will tell you to avoid unhealthy crash diets. It’s not rocket science. Desperate weight-loss tactics, such as skipping meals, extreme low-calorie diets or taking strenuous exercise with little fuel in your body, are perhaps the most useless ways of trying to get back into shape. That’s because if you repeatedly gain and lose weight you will end up with a slower metabolism, which makes it easier for your body to gain weight and harder to lose it in the future. I see many victims of crash dieting in my wellness clinic – and in a minute I’m going to reveal a great Italian secret to losing weig...

Parenting and the Sensory Ecology of Child Development
When our children err, we have a responsibility to respond in a way that meets developmental need. Yet when my daughters freak out, I freak out. The more I act at the whim of my own anxiety, the less aware and responsive I am of and to my children’s needs. As a therapist, I love to say that to the extent that I fail to go toe-to-toe with my own emotional reflexes, they will go toe-to-toe with the ones I love. Unfortunately, that statement is more descriptive than prescriptive, and I all too often play out the sequence. Our children have basic needs such as hunger and safety, and we must meet them. Their needs are like ou...

How do NASA astronauts reverse extreme aging in space?
Did you know that your cardiovascular system ages ten times faster in space than it does on earth? We age faster in space because there’s more oxidative stress, more insulin resistance, and more inflammation. You even find significant damage to mitochondria, the energy producing centers of your cells. Astronauts also experience another form of extreme aging. The tiny biological clocks that determine how long and how well we age shorten much faster in space. These tiny timekeepers are called telomeres. The shorter they are. The more prone to disease and the effects of aging your body is. But if you can keep your telomeres...

Parents, leave the multivitamins in the bottle
By Carolyn Sax, MD, a primary care physician with the Pediatric Physicians’ Organization at Boston Children’s and practices at Hyde Park Pediatrics in Hyde Park and Milton, Mass. Parents often ask me whether I recommend multivitamins for their children, and in most situations I say no. This takes a lot of people by surprise. Vitamins sound like such a good thing, right? The answer is actually somewhat complicated.  Foods that are naturally rich in vitamins are definitely a good thing, and many scientific studies have shown the benefits of eating a diet rich in nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains,...

Higher total folate intake may be associated with lower risk of exfoliation glaucoma
Researchers observed that higher total folate intake was associated with a lower risk for exfoliation glaucoma/suspected exfoliation glaucoma (SEG), supporting a possible causal role of homocysteine in EG/SEG. Elevated homocysteine, which may enhance exfoliation material formation, is one possible risk factor that has received significant research attention. Research studies demonstrate that high intake of vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and folate is associated with lower homocysteine levels. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines)

Premenstrual Syndrome
Whilst it is extremely rare for a woman to have a hysterectomy due to Premenstrual Syndrome alone, it can be a contributing factor in overall gynaecological health. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) (also known as Premenstrual Tension or PMT) is the name given to the physical, psychological and behavioural symptoms that can occur in the two weeks before a woman’s monthly period. It is estimated that almost all women of child-bearing age have some premenstrual symptoms, although it is usually at its worst between the late 20’s and early 40’s. About one woman in every 20 with PMS gets symptoms which are severe en...
