Recent investigations on human group II pyridoxal 5'-phosphate decarboxylases
(Bentham Science Publishers) The aim of the present article is to compare the structural features of a particular group of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate-dependent decarboxylases, namely the group II ?-decarboxylases. These enzymes are: aromatic amino acid, cysteine sulfinic acid, glutamate and histidine decarboxylases. They are involved in the synthesis of dopamine/serotonin, hypotaurine, ?-aminobutyric acid and histamine, respectively, molecules known to play essential biological roles. A runner ’ s hysterectomy recovery – Jo ’ s story
At 47, for eighteen months I’d been suffering excruciating pain every time I went to the loo. Sometimes, the pain was so horrendous that I would find myself subconsciously stopping myself midflow. Other things began to happen too; my constipation that I had suffered for many years at the time of my period became a permanent problem and I had a constant pain in my left groin that seemed to worsen when I sat for any length of time. An internal scan and an MRI scan drew a blank. Thankfully I had a fantastic doctor who was determined to get to the bottom of my pelvic pain. Eventually, a diagnostic laparoscopy revealed th...

How Fast Is Your Dog Aging?
All of us who love dogs are acutely aware that the lifespans of our canine companions are short - much too short. And while the years we spend with a beloved pet seem to fly by, dogs don't just suddenly die when they reach a certain age. They grow older in stages just as we do, but at a tremendously accelerated rate compared to humans. Your four-legged friend may still look and act like a puppy much of the time, but there are age related changes taking place inside him despite his youthful good looks and high energy level. The lifespan of a dog depends primarily on his size, breed (or breed mix), and health status. As a g...

UPDATE: How Much Vitamin D Should You Take?
Conclusions What is the sweet spot for vitamin D and longevity? All studies are in agreement: 40-50 ng/ml. If I had a (working) magic wand, I'd make this range much broader - but, there it is. Since it is narrow, let's cover the main sources of Vitamin D and figure out how you can get to the exact target. Sources of vitamin D We get vitamin D from supplements, sun and food--and in that order for most of us. Food Considering that we need thousands of IU's of vitamin D per day, food doesn't have that much. Some of the highest sources have only a few hundred units. Food sources of Vitamin D:[13] Salmon: 4 oz. = 500 IU...

The Nicaraguan Diet: Simple, Low-cost, Delicious and Nutritious
The mention of Nicaragua usually conjures thoughts of political instability and poverty but with the growth of tourism this perception is slowly changing. Nicaragua is fast becoming known as a beautiful land of lakes, volcanoes and beaches, however, it does not have a reputation as a culinary destination. Visitors to this Central American country do not expect to consume tasty food; to the contrary, concerns over what to eat may be high on their list. The reality is that the Nicaraguan diet is influenced by Spanish, Creole, and Indigenous cuisine, and although the dishes are simple, they are delicious, and for those wantin...

Why I Eat Red Meat
So many of us have omitted or cut down on our consumption of red meat due to negative reports in the press. However, I believe that unprocessed, grass-fed beef has its place in a healthy diet. Besides the fact that nothing is better than a juicy hamburger on the grill in the summer, the high levels of nutrients it provides can make it a healthy choice. Here are some of the stand-out nutrients you might be missing: Iron Iron is an essential nutrient involved in many different metabolic functions. It is especially important in early childhood cognitive development, energy metabolism and the immune system. One of its mos...

For Couples Who Want To Get Pregnant, Men's Habits Matter, Too
Couples who wish to get pregnant may want to avoid caffeine because it's associated with an increased risk of miscarriage, a new study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) suggests. For women, drinking more than two caffeinated drinks daily before getting pregnant was associated with a 74 percent higher risk of a miscarriage, according to the study published today (March 24) in the journal Fertility and Sterility.  But women's caffeine consumption wasn't the only factor: Among couples in which the male partner drank more than two caffeinated beverages daily before conception, there was a 73 percent higher...

Tips for Improving Your Sleep Quality for Ultimate Next-Day Energy
My Sleep Routine: Tips For Improving Your Sleep Quality For Next-Day Energy was originally posted on CapitolStartup.com Even though the post covering my morning routine of meditation, water and fasted workouts was written almost two years ago, it still remains one of my most post popular posts. And yes, I still follow that routine almost every morning. But I've learned that no matter how well my morning routine is designed and how closely I follow it, getting to and sustaining a high level of productivity -- at least for me personally -- really requires restful and rejuvenating sleep. Before even getting into what works ...

IV Therapy “Cocktail” For a Cancer Patient
Today, I want to talk to you about my patient D.B. A key treatment I offer at the Sears Institute for Anti-Aging Medicine turned her life around and boosted her chances of recovering from cancer. D.B had been a vivacious 47-year-old woman, who’d always led a healthy life. For years, she’d watched her diet carefully and exercised regularly. But then she was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. This is cancer of the inner lining of the uterus. When she came to my clinic, she’d already undergone a hysterectomy and chemotherapy. Unsurprisingly, she felt terrible. She was pale. She felt lethargic and she was experiencing s...

A new role for vitamin B6 in plants
Vitamin B6 is essential for all living organisms. Researchers have discovered an unexpected role for this micronutrient, in relation to nitrogen metabolism. The results indicate that one of the vitamers informs the plant of its content in ammonium, a basic nitrogen compound needed for the biosynthesis of various molecules essential for life. In the future, vitamin B6 could be used to ascertain the nitrogen status of plants and eventually prevent the overuse of nitrogen-containing fertilizers, say authors of a new report.
