Penile-preserving surgery for primary urothelial carcinoma of male urethra
We report an 84-year-old male patient, with a history of chronic hepatitis C, hypertension, and transient ischemic accident, who presented with dysuria and acute urinary retention. The intravenous urography showed mild prostatic enlargement, but no stone or filling defect was noted in the upper urinary tract. On urethrocystoscopy, multiple papillary tumors were found at the pendulous urethra, and the pathology of biopsy confirmed urothelial carcinoma. The patient was admitted, and electroresection with fulguration of urethral tumors was performed owing to the patient's old age and poor performance status. Intraurethral and...

Mp65-09 impact of perioperative chemotherapy on survival in patients with advanced primary urethral cancer: results of the international collaboration on primary urethral carcinoma
Primary urethral carcinoma (PUC) is an uncommon but potentially lethal genitourinary malignancy that meets the definition of a “rare cancer,” accounting for well under 1% of all malignancies. In Western countries, the incidence is reported to range between 0.6-1.6 per 1.000.000. Given the rarity of this cancer, there remain critical gaps in our understanding of the optimal management of patients with PUC. In particular, there are no reports we are aware of addressing the timing of perioperative chemotherapy in patients with clinically advanced PUC. (Source: The Journal of Urology)

Lymphadenectomy for testicular, penile, upper tract urothelial and urethral cancers
Purpose of review: The lymph node dissection (LND) is an integral component of many oncologic surgeries. Better understanding of each cancer's behaviour and improvements in surgical techniques necessitate a critical analysis of lymph node disease and the optimal LND template. This review will focus on updates in managing lymph node disease in testicular, penile, upper tract urothelial and urethral cancer. Recent findings: For testicular and penile cancer, advances have focused on reducing the morbidity associated with the standard templates of dissection while maintaining oncologic efficacy. For upper tract urothelial carc...

Pneumomediastinum as a complication of SABR for lung metastases
Conclusion: Radiation oncologist should be aware of the potential risk of severe lung toxicity caused by SABR in patients with ILD, especially when chemotherapy-induced pulmonary toxicity is administered in a short time interval. (Source: Epidemiologic Perspectives and Innovations)

Eighteen years experience of granulocyte donations—acceptable donor safety?
Conclusion: No serious short‐term AE were observed. Due to the variability of diagnoses among excluded/deceased donors, we propose that it is less likely that granulocyte donations have a causative impact on these donors' exclusion or death. J. Clin. Clinicopathological features of carcinoma of the distal penile urethra
Distal urethral carcinomas are very rare and are similar in their pathology and behaviour to tumours of the glans penis and foreskin. Similarly they are associated with Penile Intraepithelial Neoplasia (PeIN) of both differentiated and undifferentiated types. Current management is mainly surgical, but increasingly involves specialist penile preserving techniques. Handling and dissection of the specimens is broadly the same as other primary penile tumours. The prognosis of distal urethral lesions is believed to be worse than penile tumours and better than prostatic urethral tumours but the evidence is sparse. Transurethral holmium laser vaporization to the urethral tumour through a ureteroscope.
We present 2 cases of urethral cancers: one is recurrent bladder transitional cell carcinoma accompanied by urethral metastatic carcinoma located on the right side of verumontanum, and the other is primary bladder and metastatic urethral adenocarcinoma. The urethral tumour was treated by transurethral holmium laser vaporization to the urethral tumour through a ureteroscope and the bladder tumour was treated with transurethral resection and degeneration of the bladder tumour (TURD-Bt). After the second or third therapy, patients were free of urethral or bladder tumour recurrence; they also did not experience urethral strict...

[Penis-preserving surgery in patients with primary penile urethral cancer.]
CONCLUSION: Primary penile urethral cancer can be treated by a penis-preserving operation. Close follow-up is essential because recurrence can arise despite an initial R0 resection. PMID: 25272986 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Der Urologe. Ausg. A)

[Organ and function preservation in urethral cancer.]
Abstract Primary urethral carcinomas are rare tumors that can occur both in men and women. Histological patterns of these tumors are mixed, urothelial tumors occur as well as squamous cell tumors or adenocarcinomas. There are different clinical factors that define clinical prognosis, and the 1- and 5-year cancer-free survival is 75% and 54%. Therapy of locally limited disease is surgical resection, and organ-preserving treatment is possible if negative frozen sections prove complete surgical resection. However, in men a perineal urethrostomy might be necessary, and in women there is a high risk of urinary i...
