Transfusion in hemoglobinopathies and red blood cell alloimmunization: data from Sicily, Sardinia and Malta
DISCUSSION: From our study, certain indications can be formulated: 1) complete the National Registry for patients with hemoglobinopathies; 2) create a Registry of alloimmunized patients to ensure transfusion therapy is as safe as possible, considering antibody evanescence; and 3) increase the recruitment of blood donors of diverse ethnicities.PMID:37235738 | DOI:10.2450/BloodTransfus.465 (Source: Blood Transfusion)

Modeling hemoglobin levels of patients chronically transfused with red blood cells
DISCUSSION: The endogenous Hb level is introduced in the HMB model which represents the patient's self-contribution to overall Hb levels via the autologous RBC lifecycle and was estimated to be 5.0 g/dL for patients with MDS or thalassemia. Transfusion therapy approaches and complementary therapeutics can target multiple, unique model inputs while monitoring net, overall impact on transfusion efficacy. Applying the HMB model to fit individual patient Hb fluctuations will be explored in the future.PMID:37005945 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17305 (Source: Transfusion)

A comparison of serological phenotyping and molecular genotyping for Kell, Kidd, and Duffy antigens in multi-transfused thalassemia patients
CONCLUSION: The actual antigen profile in multitransfused thalassaemia patients can be reliably determined using genotyping. This would benefit in providing better antigen matched transfusion therapy to such patients hence reducing the rate of alloimmunization. (Source: Asian Journal of Transfusion Science)

Transfusion thresholds: the need for a patient-centered approach in hematologic disorders that require chronic transfusion therapy
Blood Res. 2023 Feb 27. doi: 10.5045/br.2023.2023009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTransfusion is an essential life-sustaining treatment for many patients. However, unnecessary transfusion has been reported to be related to worse patient outcomes. Further, owing to the recent pandemic, blood supply has been more challenging to maintain. Many studies have been conducted to elucidate the optimal transfusion threshold for many clinical conditions, and most suggested that a restrictive transfusion strategy has advantages over a liberal transfusion strategy. Hematologic disorders, which require chronic transfusion in many case...
