Interdisciplinary defect reconstruction of upper aerodigestive fistulas-case series and treatment algorithm
CONCLUSION: Complex defects of the upper aerodigestive tract with multiple previous operations can be successfully reconstructed. Because of its versatility, the ALT flap seems to be a very good option. Prerequisite for this is an interdisciplinary treatment approach with a critical assessment of patient- and disease-specific factors.PMID:37707515 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-023-01358-y (Source: HNO)

Silicone Pectoral Implant to Solve Aesthetic Chest Deformity After Pectoralis Flap Harvesting for Laryngotracheal Reconstruction
Conclusions The pectoral implant technique seems safe and provides reshaping of the male chest wall, significantly improving the cosmetic appearance of the patient. In addition, its use with associated procedures such as lipofilling allows optimal results to be obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case to describe the use of a pectoral implant to solve donor site morbidity after pectoralis flap harvesting for any reconstructive purpose.Level of Evidence V This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. Right phrenic nerve palsy following long-gap esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula repair
Ashitosh D Pokharkar, M Aditya, Deepak Kandpal, Saroja Balan, Vidya Gupta, Sujit K ChowdharyJournal of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons 2023 28(5):433-435 Esophageal atresia (EA) and tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) are surgically correctable congenital anomalies with reported surgical common complications such as anastomotic leaks, recurrent TEF, and esophageal strictures; however, phrenic nerve injury (PNI) is a very rare but possible complication which we have highlighted in our case report. Here, we report a baby girl operated for long-gap EA and TEF having respiratory distress and failed attempts to wean off o...

Nanocomposite hydrogel based on chitosan/laponite for sealing and repairing tracheoesophageal fistula
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Aug 7:126177. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126177. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is an abnormal connection between the trachea and esophagus that severely impairs quality of life. Current treatment options have limitations, including conservative treatment, surgical repair, and esophageal stent implantation. Here, we introduced laponite (LP) nano-clay to improve chitosan-based hydrogels' rheological properties and mechanical properties and developed an endoscopically injectable nanocomposite shear-thinning hydrogel to seal and repair fistulas as an innovative materi...

Esophageal Atresia Associated with Congenital Duodenal Obstruction: Turkish Esophageal Atresia Registry (TEAR) Evaluation
Conclusion Congenital duodenal obstruction associated with EA is a complex problem. Delayed diagnosis is common. Management strategies regarding single-stage repairs or gastrostomy insertions vary notably depending on the patient characteristics and institutional preferences. Tracheoesophageal Fistula as a Complication of Prolonged Ventilation in COVID-19: Description of Reconstruction and Review of the Literature
We present a case of TEF in a 63-year-old female secondary to prolonged mechanical ventilation in the setting of COVID pneumonia, detailing the clinical findings and surgical repair. Primary closure of the esophageal defect with pectoralis major muscle flap onlay and tracheal resection, with median sternotomy for access, provided successful intervention, allowing for subsequent tracheostomy decannulation and return to a complete oral diet. This case offers further evidence of the increased risk of airway complications in COVID-19 infection and provides otolaryngologists with an example of a rare surgical approach useful in...
