The Wheat Belly Guide to Natural Sweeteners
The world of sweeteners can be confusing, as there are many choices. Making the wrong choice can lead to type 2 diabetes and weight gain, or diarrhea and high blood sugars. But making the right choice can mean enjoying cheesecake or cookies without health problems or weight gain. Here, I review the 5 natural sweeteners that we use on the Wheat Belly (and now Undoctored) lifestyles. The post The Wheat Belly Guide to Natural Sweeteners appeared first on Dr. William Davis. Strawberry Cheesecake Pops
Here is another variation on frozen pops to help you enjoy your grain-free summer: Strawberry Cheesecake Pops that taste like a slice of creamy cheesecake. Despite their wonderful sweet creaminess, each pop provides only 4 grams net carbs, well within safe bounds and will not trigger a rise in blood sugar. Makes 4 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries 1 can full-fat coconut milk (13.5 ounces; not “lite”) 4 ounces (1/2 package) cream cheese 3 tablespoons Virtue Sweetener (or other natural sweetener equivalent to 3/4 cup sugar) Puree strawberries in food chopper/processor. In medium saucepan over low-medium heat,...

High-fructose corn syrup — a wolf in sheep ’ s clothing
While sugar in processed foods comes as sucrose, a 50:50 mix of glucose and fructose, it also comes as the ubiquitous high-fructose corn syrup, containing as much as 66 percent fructose. High-fructose corn syrup is the sweetener of choice among manufacturers, whether in low-fat salad dressing or Bloody Mary mix. Fructose is the source of many of the problems of these sweeteners. Glucose, the same as the glucose of blood sugar, also has adverse consequences, but fructose has greater potential to wreak havoc. This did not become clear until the processed food industry began loading up on high-fructose corn syrup, an inexpens...

Chocolate Peanut Butter Pops
Here’s another frozen pop recipe to serve after a summer barbecue or dinner. The combination of chocolate and peanut butter makes this taste like a frozen Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. As with all Wheat Belly desserts, the lack of sugar and grains makes this a healthy treat that you should feel no guilt over serving. Makes 4 pops 1 can (13.5 ounces) full-fat coconut milk (not “lite”) 3/4 cup peanut butter (unsweetened) 3 tablespoons Virtue Sweetener (or other natural, non-caloric sweetener equivalent to 3/4 cup sugar) 3 1/2-ounce bar 85% or greater cocoa chocolate In medium saucepan over low heat, st...

Strawberry Coconut Pops
Here’s an ultra-simple recipe for a healthy frozen dessert perfect for summer. Because no sugar or other unhealthy ingredients are used, serve these Strawberry Coconut Pops without worries. You can also enjoy them yourself without worrying about gaining weight or counting calories. You can easily modify this recipe by replacing strawberries with other berries or fruit. I used the Tiki Molds I bought at Sur la Table, but many other fun shapes are available. Makes 4 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries 1 can coconut milk (full-fat, not “lite”) or coconut cream 2 tablespoons Virtue Sweetener (or other natural ...

Magnesium Water UNDOCTORED Style
The most highly absorbable form of magnesium is magnesium bicarbonate. Because of an unusual tendency to absorb water in dry form (e.g., tablet or powder), no supplement manufacturer sells it. But you can make it in your own kitchen quite easily using readily available ingredients. Use Magnesium Water in place of magnesium supplements—i.e., don’t take both—to avoid long-term magnesium overload. A 4-ounce (1/2-cup) serving of Magnesium Water provides 90 milligrams of elemental magnesium; 4 ounces twice per day adds 180 milligrams of elemental magnesium to your daily intake. You can drink up to 16 ounces per day (8 oun...

Shopping For a Health Insurance Plan Again. Seriously?
By PAUL KECKLEY On the golf course, my son Jason has an uncanny ability to hit any tree within earshot of his intended target line. It’s fait accompli in his book. And his reaction is always the same: “seriously!” The same is his plight with health insurance. Though a self-employed healthy single male with a successful career and no need for government assistance in buying coverage, he just got this letter from his insurer: “The last seven years within the health insurance market have led all of us to decisions we have never before considered. It has remained a very challenging environment as the debate over the 20...

Healthy Low-Carb Barbecue Sauce
Here’s a recipe for a Low-Carb Barbecue Sauce I modified slightly from the original I shared in the Wheat Belly 30-Minute Cookbook. You may have noticed that nearly all commercial barbecue sauces at the supermarket contain high-fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, or sugar as primary ingredients, converting your tasty barbecued ribs or chicken into a toxic sugar exposure. This low-carb version yields 8 grams net carbs per 1/4 cup due to the carbs from tomatoes and the bit of molasses. (The molasses is optional, but does add some extra depth of flavor.) Spread on ribs, chicken, or burgers that contain zero carbs, and you...

Pi ña Colada Prebiotic Shake
Piña Colada Prebiotic Shake This delicious recipe is just one of many you will find in Undoctored. This tropical combination of pineapple and coconut is a treat. Use unsweetened frozen or, of course, fresh pineapple, instead of canned. I like using frozen pineapple so that I can use just a little bit at a time and save the rest. 1 peeled green banana or peeled raw white potato, coarsely chopped 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk, almond milk, or hemp milk 1⁄2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut 1⁄4 cup chopped fresh or frozen pineapple Sweetener equivalent to 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon inulin or FOS powder (optional) In...

Coffee Liqueur Without Sugar
There seem to be many coffee lovers in the Wheat Belly community, so I thought I’d share an old recipe I’ve had many times for Coffee Liqueur, similar to what you buy as Kahlua. I’ve served this to guests on a number of occasions and they’ve enjoyed it. This version, unlike store-bought Kahlua, includes no sugar and has no carbs. (The alcohol from the vodka, however, can turn off ketosis if more than a little bit is consumed, something to be aware of for anyone trying to maintain ketosis.) Enjoy straight or with heavy cream or canned coconut milk stirred in. You can, of course, make an alcohol-fre...

How can you find a cheaper natural lip balm? Episode 161
How can you find a cheaper natural lip balm? Abby says…I have a question about Bite Beauty’s Agave Lip Mask. It claims its natural formula smoothes, nourishes and moisturizes lips with a bio active combination of organic agave nectar, jojoba oil, vanilla co2 extract, and triple the amount of the antioxidant trans-resveratrol found in red wine. It doesn’t mention anything about it containing lead so I’m wondering if it’s safe and effective to use on dry lips. I’m also wondering if you can tell me if there’s anything else on the market that might be similar to this because this is very expen...

Could artificial sweeteners be bad for your brain?
This study did not look at the overall health effects of diet soft drinks; it’s possible they are still a healthier choice than sugar-sweetened beverages. This study was conducted when most artificially sweetened beverages contained saccharin (Sweet’N Low, Sweet Twin), acesulfame-K (Sunett, Sweet One), or aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal). Newer sweeteners, such as sucralose (as in Splenda) were unlikely to have been included. While the risk of stroke or dementia was higher among those consuming diet soft drinks, only about 3% of the studied population had strokes and about 5% developed dementia. So, while a higher risk wa...

Dana Carpender ’ s Easy No-Sugar-Added Ketchup
Prolific low-carb cookbook author and friend, Dana Carpender, shared this recipe for ketchup made without sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, fructose, or the newly-named “corn sweetener.” Instead, she chose the natural sweeteners, monk fruit and erythritol, found in Virtue Sweetener, also the most economical of natural, non-caloric sweeteners. This will be one of the 500 recipes Dana introduces in her new book 500 Keto Recipes to be released this fall, 2017. Easy No-Sugar-Added Ketchup Heinz no-sugar-added ketchup is quite good. But it’s pricier, and includes artificial sweeteners some people avoid. This r...
