Gisele Had an Aw-Worthy Breakfast
Don't even pretend that those berry eyes and banana grin aren't making you crack a smile right now. How cuuute (say it with two syllables) is this healthy breakfast that Gisele posted on Insta this morning? (Source: The ND Blog: Notes from the Nutritionista by Monica Reinagel, L.D.N., C.N.S.)

Top 5 Foods to Help You Sleep Better and Stay Healthier
Many adults today suffer insomnia. If not that, they rarely have a restful night's sleep. They are usually restless, cannot seem to find a comfortable position to sleep in, and are easily distracted by odd sounds that are common at night. There are also people who get enough hours of sleep, and yet they wake up tired, sluggish, and wanting to crawl under the covers again. The usual solutions are to get a prescription from a physician (for those who are diagnosed to be insomniacs), and to change the bed for a moderately softer mattress—preferably, ones stuffed with memory foam. Pillows that are too soft or too hard are a...

Low-FODMAP Diet: A New Fad?
By Amy Campbell Back in 2009 (can it really be that long ago?), I wrote a short series on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is a condition (not a disease) characterized by a number of symptoms including bloating, cramping, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. About one in five Americans has IBS, and having it can range from being mildly annoying to downright debilitating. There are different kinds of treatments available, including changing one's diet, exercising, stress reduction, and medication. A treatment from down under People who have IBS will tell you that sometimes the above approaches work for them, and sometimes th...

US-EU Trade Talks: Don't Forget about the Tariffs
Simon Lester In the context of the recently launced US-EU free trade talks (formally, the “Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership,” or TTIP), commentators have noted that tariffs between the US and EU are low, and thus the key part of the talks will deal with so-called regulatory barriers to trade.  An article in Inside U.S. Trade observes: “Overall, the U.S. average tariff rate is 3.5 percent, although the average tariff rate on goods that the EU actually shipped to the U.S. last year was even lower, at 1.2 percent, … .” But these average figures mask some significant “tariff peaks.” &...

Funny Allergy Quotes, Jokes, Stories and a List of Crazy Reactions.
If you're looking for funny allergy quotes, jokes and stories you've come to the right place.  I asked my readers from facebook to provide me with their experiences they've had regarding crazy allergy reactions and they did not let me down.  They relayed dozens of incidents they've experienced through the years.  Over the years I've discovered several  funny allergies myself, including allergies to prednisone, diet products and the color red.  Some patients have dozens of allergies.   My experience is that most of these allergies are not allergies in the physiological sense.   The te...

Building Unity Farm - Creating a Brand
As we move from the farm building stage to the farm operations stage, Kathy and I are turning our attention to the basics of running our farming business.   We've filed articles of incorporation (Unity Farm LLC), created a formal land management plan for review by the town of Sherborn, built basic processes for recording income/expenses, documented options for selling our products and formulated a multi-year strategic plan leading to full recognition as an agricultural enterprise.Creating a brand is an important step for us as we begin to build awareness of our apples, honey, mushrooms, alpaca fiber, handmade soa...

Tasty snippets from Italy
When Julia picked me up at Bologna airport she asked, “Do you want to get straight to work, or would you like a surprise?” Umm… We hit the autostrade and she whisked us away for… an afternoon in Venice. Venice! I know it’s been ten years and I should be over the novelty of countries with famous places crammed close together, but when you grow up with endless boring roads of dirt dirt dirt sheep dirt dirt dirt small town kangaroo dirt dirt it’s endlessly exciting to just zap into an iconic place for a wander. Even if your damn TOES get sunburned to little pink stumps, despite being marin...

I had a post all worked out about how I'd lost all joy in my job. . .
And then it got cold.Let's review the bidding: Yesterday, the high was 85*F. That's somewhere north of 29 degrees for you guys who are using a sane and sensible temperature scale.Last night, the low was 50*F. Today, the *high* was 47*F.Tonight, it's supposed to get down close to freezing. I hope the tomato plants and basil live.In short, go home, Texas weather. You're drunk.I refuse to talk about nursing right now, because Manglement has indeed sucked all the joy out of my job recently. Instead of being sad that a friend of mine is leaving for a new job, I'm burning with envy.So instead, let's talk about food. I have a cra...

Preparing the Kitchen and Vegetable Gardens
This post brought to you by Scotts Miracle-Gro. All opinions are 100% mine. I have longed for the arrival of spring and summer, missing all the delicious garden and local-grown vegetables and herbs that we enjoyed so much last summer.  We live in a rural area where many are concerned about preserving our natural resources.  The concept of sustainable gardening is an important one, in fact there is a community garden that many contribute time to in our Town, reaping the benefits of the vegetables, and sharing the overflow with food pantries in Town. But for this post, I am concentrating on preparations for my own ...

Dear Diary
So much to rant about today. The girls are doing a dance competition this weekend. I’m trapped in my own little version of Dance Moms. Aaaaauuuuuggghhh. Somebody help me. One daughter complains because she’s in the back of one dance the whole time. Another daughter is upset because people are mad at her because she’s in front during one of her dances. Glitter is all over our fricking kitchen and it doesn’t come up with wet wipes, either. We have to purchase hair extensions with curls for $25 for the girls, and we have to make SURE to purchase the color that most closely matches the girl’s hair...
