How do physicians offer new and innovative treatments?
My own PCP at home offers regenerative stem cell therapies for his patients. As an aspiring doc, I hope to one day offer cutting edge treatments like this. Particularly, I really want to be on the frontier of using CRISPR/Cas9 in a clinical setting. If these are my goals, is there a specific path I should take in medical school? Does every board certified physician have the ability to offer innovative treatments? (assuming they've already been approved for clinical use). Does MD vs DO matter...

Research Importance
I have one semester of research experience in a stem cell GI lab. I was just a research assistant, helping out with PCRs, cryosectioning, and staining. I did not get on a publication nor lead a research project. I am an incoming junior applying for medical school next June (2018). Tips for Summer Research Programs for freshman
I'm finishing up my applications to several summer research programs, including sloan-kettering, Harvard stem cell, Johns Hopkins SIP, NIH, Leadership Alliance, and MD Anderson. My first choice would be sloan-kettering since the PI I work for now and throughout all of high school is on the admissions board for the program.
