Role of aminopeptidase N ‐like in the acquisition of begomoviruses by Bemisia tabaci, the whitefly vector
In this study, we identified an aminopeptidase N-like protein (BtAPN) inB.  tabaci Asia  II 1, an efficient vector of SLCMV, which is involved in the SLCMV transmission process. Through the use of glutathione S-transferase pull-down assay and LC-MS/MS analysis, we demonstrated the interaction between BtAPN and the coat protein (CP) of SLCMV. This interaction was further confirmedin vitro, and we observed an induction ofBtAPN gene expression following SLCMV infection. By interfering with the function of BtAPN, the quantities of SLCMV were significantly reduced in various parts ofB.  tabaci Asia  II 1, including the wh...

Bruns Garland Syndrome as the first presentation of type 2 diabetes: two case reports and a practical approach to diagnosis
ConclusionDiagnosis of diabetic radiculoplexus neuropathy requires a comprehensive workup to rule out other sinister pathologies. This case report has a dual importance; it describes diabetic radiculoplexus neuropathy as the very first manifestation of two previously healthy people, giving rise to a new diagnosis of diabetes and, at the same time, reporting on diabetic cervical radiculoplexus neuropathy, which is extremely rare and has never been previously reported in Sri Lanka. In vitro growth of Leishmania parasites from biopsy samples of suspected cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis cases in Sri Lanka: An observational study
Exp Parasitol. 2024 Feb 11:108710. doi: 10.1016/j.exppara.2024.108710. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSri Lanka reports a large focus of Leishmania donovani caused cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Subsequent emergence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was also reported recently. Expansion of the on-going disease outbreak and many complexities indicate urgent need to enhance early case detection methods. In vitro cultivation (IVC) of parasites causing visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is important for disease confirmation and to obtain sufficient quantities of parasites required in many scientific studies. IVC is carried out as a useful...

Multifunctionality benefits of small-scale urban agriculture
AbstractDue to the scarcity of land, small-scale agriculture farming is more suitable in the urban context. But there are significant knowledge gaps that remain regarding small-scale urban food production systems, especially, in developing countries. Hence, this study was carried out to investigate the farmers ’ perception of the multifunctional benefits of small-scale urban agriculture activities in Sri Lanka and the factors determining (demographic, farm management, and economic) those perceptions. A perception survey was conducted for 402 small-scale farmers in Colombo District, Sri Lanka. Ordinal re gression was appl...

Efficacy and safety of deferoxamine, deferasirox and deferiprone triple iron chelator combination therapy for transfusion-dependent {beta}-thalassaemia with very high iron overload: a protocol for randomised controlled clinical trial
Introduction Despite the improvement in medical management, many patients with transfusion-dependent β-thalassaemia die prematurely due to transfusion-related iron overload. As per the current guidelines, the optimal chelation of iron cannot be achieved in many patients, even with two iron chelators at their maximum therapeutic doses. Here, we evaluate the efficacy and safety of triple combination treatment with deferoxamine, deferasirox and deferiprone over dual combination of deferoxamine and deferasirox on iron chelation in patients with transfusion-dependent β-thalassaemia with very high iron overload. Metho...

Breeding Habitat Preference of the Dengue Vector Mosquitoes < em > Aedes aegypti < /em > and < em > Aedes albopictus < /em > from Urban, Semiurban, and Rural Areas in Kurunegala District, Sri Lanka
J Trop Med. 2024 Jan 29;2024:4123543. doi: 10.1155/2024/4123543. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTElimination of vector mosquito larvae and their breeding environments is an effective strategy in dengue disease control. Present study examined larval density and water quality in breeding habitats and container preference of dengue vectors Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus. Larval surveys were conducted monthly in urban, semiurban, and rural sites in Kurunegala, Sri Lanka, from January 2019 to December 2021. Larval densities were recorded under the following three categories: type of container (16 types), type of material (6 types), an...

Prevalence of growth hormone receptor gene polymorphisms and their association with milk production and fertility-related traits of cross-bred dairy cows in Sri Lanka
This study investigated the association of selected growth hormone receptor (GHR) gene SNPs with selected fertility and milk production-related phenotypes of cross-bred dairy cows (n = 153) reared on three National Livestock Development Board farms in Sri Lanka. Selected cows were genetically screened for SNPs in the exon 08 (n = 153) and 5' upstream (n = 118) regions of the GHR gene using the target sequencing method. The relationships between different genotypes and fertility traits (average calving interval, average number of services per conception, and age at first calving) and milk production-related traits (average ...

Polyphenol Mediated Suppression of Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HepG2) Cell Proliferation by Clerodendrum infortunatum L. Root
CONCLUSION: The obtained result of the present study demonstrates that the antioxidant potential and antiproliferative activity of AECIR is attributed to the presence of polyphenols. Furthermore, the findings provide the scientific base for anti-cancer potential of AECIR.PMID:38285803 | DOI:10.31557/APJCP.2024.25.1.351 (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention)
