The impacts of pullulan soaking on radish seed germination and seedling growth under salt stress
This study was designed to explore the impact of the pre-soaking of radish seeds in a pullulan solution on seed germination and subsequent seedling growth under salt stress conditions. Pullulan soaking was found to enhance the germination rates of radish seeds subjected to salt stress, while also enhancing the aboveground growth of radish seedlings. Pullulan soaking resulted in increases in chlorophyll, soluble protein, and soluble sugar concentrations in the leaves of these seedlings, together with greater peroxidase activity and root activity as well as decreases in Na+ and malondialdehyde concentrations. This provides a...

The effects of pyrroloquinoline quinone disodium salt on brain function and physiological processes
J Med Invest. 2024;71(1.2):23-28. doi: 10.2152/jmi.71.23.ABSTRACTPyrroloquinoline quinone disodium salt (PQQ) is a red trihydrate crystal that was approved as a new food ingredient by FDA in 2008. Now, it is approved as a food in Japan and the EU. PQQ has redox properties and exerts antioxidant, neuroprotective, and mitochondrial biogenesis effects. The baseline intake level of PQQ is considered to be 20 mg/day. PQQ ingestion lowers blood lipid peroxide levels in humans, suggesting antioxidant activity. In the field of cognitive function, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have been conducted. Various improvements hav...

Enhancing phycocyanin yield from Spirulina sp. under salt stress using various extraction methods
Arch Microbiol. 2024 May 12;206(6):258. doi: 10.1007/s00203-024-03968-8.ABSTRACTPhycocyanin, a blue-coloured pigment, predominantly found and derived from Spirulina sp., has gained researchers' interest due to its vibrant hues and other attractive properties like antioxidant and anti-microbial. However, the lack of reliable and sustainable phycocyanin extraction strategies without compromising the quality has hindered the scaling up of its production processes for commercial purposes. Here in this study, phycocyanin was extracted from wet and dry biomass Spirulina sp., using three different physical cell disruption methods...
