Development of p53-targeting drugs that increase radioresistance in normal tissues.
Authors: Ochi S, Nishiyama Y, Morita A Abstract Radiation damage to normal tissues is a serious concern in radiation therapy. Advances in radiotherapeutic technology have improved the dose distribution of the target volumes and risk organs, but damage to risk organs that are located within the irradiation field still limits the allowable prescription dose. To overcome this dose-limiting toxicity, and to further improve the efficacy of radiotherapy, the development of drugs that protect normal tissues but not cancer tissues from the effects of radiation are expected to be developed based on molecular target-based dr...

Electrons released from both flavins of NADPH-P450 reductase contribute to the reductive mobilization of iron from ferritin.
Authors: Takaishi K, Kitahata H Abstract Ferritin, an iron storage protein, plays an important role in iron homeostasis. The mechanism of reductive mobilization of iron from ferritin has not been clarified yet despite many studies. The aim of this study was to assess the mechanisms of the mobilization of iron from ferritin by NADPH P-450 reductase. Nucleotide-dependent flavoenzymes generated significant mobilization of iron from ferritin. The possibility of reductive mobilization of iron from ferritin by electrons released from flavin sites or heme site of two flavoenzymes was investigated to elucidate the mediator...

Short-term pre-operative systemic administration with low-dose of steroid does not make a false-negative diagnosis of definite eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis after endoscopic sinus surgery.
Authors: Fujimoto C, Tamura K, Takaishi S, Kawata I, Kitamura Y, Takeda N Abstract According to JESREC criteria, definite eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) is postoperatively diagnosed based on over 70 eosinophils in high power magnification fields of the resected nasal polyps in patients with probable ECRS. Preoperative systemic administration with steroid is a standard practice, because it reduced intraoperative bleeding during endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) in patients with ECRS. However, it was recently reported that systemic administration with steroid decreased the number of eosinophils in the nasal ...

Texture analysis of sonographic muscle images can distinguish myopathic conditions.
Authors: Nodera H, Sogawa K, Takamatsu N, Hashiguchi S, Saito M, Mori A, Osaki Y, Izumi Y, Kaji R Abstract Given the recent technological advent of muscle ultrasound (US), classification of various myopathic conditions could be possible, especially by mathematical analysis of muscular fine structure called texture analysis. We prospectively enrolled patients with three neuromuscular conditions and their lower leg US images were quantitatively analyzed by texture analysis and machine learning methodology in the following subjects :  Inclusion body myositis (IBM) [N=11] ; myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) [N=19...

New scoring system to create a prognostic criteria in colorectal carcinoma based on serum elevation of C-reactive protein and decrease in lymphocyte in peripheral blood.
Authors: Nozoe T, Kono M, Kuma S, Tsujita E, Ohga T Abstract BACKGROUND: Both serum elevation of C-reactive protein (CRP) and reduction of lymphocyte in the peripheral blood has been known as indicator for malignant potential of human tumors. METHODS: Whether newly devised CLS (CRP/Lymphocyte Score), based on combined data of serum elevation of CRP and of lymphocyte percentage in the peripheral blood can be an indicator for progressive potential in colorectal carcinoma was examined in 280 cases who had been surgically treated. RESULTS: Significant difference in survival was observed both between CLS 0 and 1...

Effectiveness of self-exercise on elderly patients after hip fracture : A retrospective cohort study.
This study identified in-hospital hip fracture patients admitted to an acute hospital. After applying exclusion criteria, 375 patients were eligible. The primary outcome was motor Functional Independence Measure (FIM) efficiency. Of the patients with hip fracture, 39% performed self-exercises. Patients who performed self-exercise had significantly higher motor FIM efficiency than those who did not (1.22 vs. 0.79 ; P ?0.01). Multivariable regression analysis showed that motor FIM efficiency was significantly and positively correlated with self-exercise (coefficient, 0.25 ; 95% confidence interval, 0.13 to 0.43 ; P ?0.01). T...

Recurrent venous thrombosis during direct oral anticoagulant therapy in a patient with protein S deficiency.
Authors: Yagi S, Kagawa K, Fujimoto E, Sata M Abstract Protein S (PS) deficiency is an inherited thrombophilia associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). In Japan, unfractionated heparin followed by warfarin has been historically applied for the treatment of VTE. Recent evidence showed that direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) were non-inferior to standard therapy with warfarin, with significantly less bleeding in patients with VTE. However, it is unknown whether DOACs are effective for the treatment of VTE in patients with thrombophilia, including protein S deficiency, due to lack of evidence...

Lambda-like J wave due to acute myocardial infarction of the diagonal branch.
We report a case of acute myocardial infarction that showed discrepancy between ST-T elevation with lambda-like ischemic J wave in a broad area and coronary angiographical finding of diagonal branch occlusion.
