Long-term remote sensing-based methods for monitoring air pollution and cloud cover in the Balkan countries
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Mar 20. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-32982-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe use of remote sensing and GIS methodology has accelerated the processing of data on pollution, but has also raised a question about the accuracy of the same. The research focuses on four main air pollutants (CO, NO, SO2, O3), the data on which were obtained from satellite images of Landsat 8 and Landsat 9, for the period 2000-2020. The data on relative cloudiness were obtained from the database CHELSA (Climatologies at high resolution for the earth's land surface areas) for the period 1980-2010. All the data were fur...

Treatment adherence and the contemporary approach to treating type 2 diabetes mellitus
Biomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub. 2024 Mar 14. doi: 10.5507/bp.2024.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe rising burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) poses a significant healthcare challenge on a global scale. The economic impact is also substantial and continually increasing. In Serbia, even though the prevalence is officially around 12 percent, nearly 40 percent of the adult population is estimated to be living with undiagnosed diabetes and more than half the population is obese or overweight. This review comprehensively addresses the present approach to treating T2D, emphasizing the critical role...

Moving forward after the COVID-19 pandemic: Lessons learned in primary care from the multi-country PRICOV-19 study
CONCLUSION: Policymakers, primary care associations, and the broader healthcare system are urged to collaboratively take responsibility and increase support for GP practices to enhance their resilience, adaptability, and capacity to deliver safe and equitable healthcare during future crises.PMID:38511848 | DOI:10.1080/13814788.2024.2328716 (Source: European Journal of General Practice)

Whole exome sequencing in Serbian patients with hereditary spastic paraplegia
Abstract   Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a group of neurodegenerative diseases with a high genetic and clinical heterogeneity. Numerous HSP patients remain genetically undiagnosed despite screening for known genetic causes of HSP. Therefore, identification of novel variants and genes is needed. Our previous study analyzed 74 adult Serbian HSP patients from 65 families using panel of the 13 most common HSP genes in combination with a copy number variation analysis. Conclusive genetic findings were established in 23 patients from 19 families (29%). In the present study, nine patients from nine families previously ...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1336: Mass-Spectrometry-Based Research of Cosmetic Ingredients
a Elena Sandu Cosmetic products are chemical substances or mixtures used on the skin, hair, nails, teeth, and the mucous membranes of the oral cavity, whose use is intended to clean, protect, correct body odor, perfume, keep in good condition, or change appearance. The analysis of cosmetic ingredients is often challenging because of their huge complexity and their adulteration. Among various analytical tools, mass spectrometry (MS) has been largely used for compound detection, ingredient screening, quality control, detection of product authenticity, and health risk evaluation. This work is focused on the MS application...

Impact of prolonged liver ischemia during intermittent Pringle maneuver on postoperative outcome following liver resection
CONCLUSION: Intermittent Pringle maneuver with CIT exceeding 60 min is a safe method for bleeding control during liver resection with no impact on postoperative morbidity and mortality.PMID:38485590 | DOI:10.1016/j.asjsur.2024.03.005 (Source: Asian Journal of Surgery)

Contamination levels, influencing factors, and risk assessment of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in house dust of northern Serbia
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Mar 11. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-32836-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPolybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a group of compounds that, due to their applications, are considered mainly indoor contaminants. To obtain the first information about the presence of PBDEs in Serbia, dust samples (n = 50) were collected in settlements in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina. The selected/target congeners (BDE-28, 47, 99, 100, 153, 154, and 183) were extracted from house dust by microwave-assisted extraction technique, and purified extracts were analyzed on a dual-column gas chromatograph...

Screening Men and Women above the Age of 50 Years for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: A Pilot Study in an Upper Middle Income Country
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of AAA has not been reduced in all countries, and screening strategies might be changed based on local epidemiological data. The results of this pilot study underline the importance of exploring the prevalence of AAA in populations with a high prevalence of smoking.PMID:38460757 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejvs.2024.03.003 (Source: PubMed: Eur J Vasc Endovasc ...)
