Assessment of Institutional Implementation Research Capacity of the National Institutes of Health D43 Network
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Sep 5:tpmd230265. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0265. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImplementation science enhances the efficient practice of solutions from research to real-world application. Low- and lower- to middle-income countries may benefit significantly from implementation research given their limited resources. The National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center D43 network consists of partnerships between foreign and U.S.-based institutions and aims to strengthen global health research. This paper assesses the D43 network's implementation research focus and training capacity. A survey w...

The effect of butylphthalide on improving the neurological function of patients with acute anterior circulation cerebral infarction after mechanical thrombectomy
Medicine (Baltimore). 2023 Aug 25;102(34):e34616. doi: 10.1097/MD.0000000000034616.ABSTRACTButylphthalide can improve blood circulation in patients with acute cerebral infarction. Complement 3a receptor 1 (C3aR1) is involved in the regulation of innate immune response and pathogen monitoring, which is closely related to the pathophysiological processes of breast cancer, neurogenesis and lipid catabolism. Our study explored the therapeutic effect of butylphthalide on improving the neurological function of patients with acute anterior circulation cerebral infarction after mechanical thrombectomy, and evaluated the correlatio...

2023 Vascular Research Initiatives Conference: Structural and Immune Cells in Vascular Disease
JVS Vasc Sci. 2023 Jul 10;4:100117. doi: 10.1016/j.jvssci.2023.100117. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe 2023 Vascular Research Initiatives Conference (VRIC) was held in Boston, Massachusetts, and coincided with the first day of Vascular Discovery 2023, hosted by the American Heart Association. VRIC attracts vascular clinicians, surgeon-scientists, and basic science researchers to a common arena to facilitate the exchange of basic and translational science to stimulate and inspire participants to study and find solutions to vascular conditions. The theme of the conference this year was "Structural and Immune Cells in Vascular D...

Comparative Analysis of the Results of Stroke Treatment With Multiple Administrations of Wharton's Jelly Mesenchymal Stem Cells-Derived HE-ATMP and Standard Conservative Treatment: Case Series Study
Cell Transplant. 2023 Jan-Dec;32:9636897231195145. doi: 10.1177/09636897231195145.ABSTRACTStroke remains still the leading cause of long-term disability worldwide. Although interventions such as early reperfusion, intravenous thrombolysis, and endovascular revascularization have shown neurological benefit in stroke patients, there is still lack of effective treatment enabling regeneration of nervous tissue after cerebral ischemic episodes. Cell therapy is an evolving opportunity for stroke survivors with residual neurological deficits. The purpose of this study was to evaluate safety and potential efficacy of multiple admi...

Family size for women with primary ovarian insufficiency and their relatives
Hum Reprod. 2023 Aug 25:dead168. doi: 10.1093/humrep/dead168. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSTUDY QUESTION: How does the number of children in women with primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) compare to the number for control women across their reproductive lifespans?SUMMARY ANSWER: Approximately 14% fewer women with POI will have children, but for those able to have children the median number is 1 less than for age-matched controls.WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Women with POI are often identified when presenting for fertility treatment, but some women with POI already have children and there remains a low chance for pregnancy afte...

Identifying molecular phenotypes in sepsis: an analysis of two prospective observational cohorts and secondary analysis of two randomised controlled trials
In this study, we sought to derive molecular phenotypes in critically ill adults with sepsis, determine their overlap with previous ARDS phenotypes, and evaluate whether they respond differently to treatment in completed sepsis trials.METHODS: We used clinical data and plasma biomarkers from two prospective sepsis cohorts, the Validating Acute Lung Injury biomarkers for Diagnosis (VALID) study (N=1140) and the Early Assessment of Renal and Lung Injury (EARLI) study (N=818), in latent class analysis (LCA) to identify the optimal number of classes in each cohort independently. We used validated models trained to classify ARD...

The Chronic Overlapping Pain Condition Screener
We present a Chronic Overlapping Pain Conditions Screener that is logic-driven, efficient, and freely available in electronic format to non-profit entities. Thirty experts were convened to identify and modify self-report criteria for each Chronic Overlapping Pain Condition as well as criteria that trigger the administration of the diagnostic criteria from a body map and brief series of questions. Their recommendations were then programmed into Research Electronic Data Capture platform and refined for comprehensibility and ease of use by patient focus groups. The electronic screener and physician-administered criteria were ...

A Review of the Historical Use of Sex as a Biological Variable in the < em > American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulation < /em >
Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol. 2023 Aug 18. doi: 10.1152/ajpheart.00278.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite National Institute of Health (NIH) mandates requiring sex as a biological variable (SABV), female underrepresentation persists in research, driving the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology (Am J Physiol Heart Circ) to publish SABV expectations in 2021. To determine progress within the Am J Physiol Heart Circ, this mini-review evaluated SABV during the first six months of each decade from 1980 to 2020, and 2019 to mitigate pandemic influence. Of the 2,021 articles published, 1,087 ...
