Effects of adjuvant berberine therapy on acute ischemic stroke: A meta-analysis
Phytother Res. 2023 Jul 8. doi: 10.1002/ptr.7920. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the clinical efficacy of berberine (BBR) in treating acute ischemic stroke (AIS), explore its anti-inflammatory effects, and assess its potential applications for AIS patients. We comprehensively searched nine databases from inception until July 1, 2022, to identify clinical trials investigating the use of BBR in treating AIS. We performed statistical analyses using RevMan5.4 software and focused on primary outcomes such as inflammatory markers as well as secondary outcomes including immune system indica...

Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement and Minimal Clinically Important Difference for Hand Surgeons
J Am Acad Orthop Surg. 2023 Jul 6. doi: 10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-00318. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatient-reported outcome measurement (PROM) tools are used to evaluate health status and response to treatment and have been integral in the effort to improve the quality of care provided. Patient reported outcomes (PROs) have garnered additional attention since becoming a priority of the National Institutes of Health in the early part of this century, and their use in both clinical practice and research has subsequently increased. In the upper extremity, a variety of PRO instruments exist that can assist physicians in their abi...

PRISM - Pain Recovery and Integrative Systems Model: A Process-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Approach for Physical Therapy
Phys Ther. 2023 Jun 27:pzad077. doi: 10.1093/ptj/pzad077. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Academy of Orthopedic Physical Therapy (AOPT) Pain Education Manual (PEM) supports the advancement of modern pain content, and the National Institutes of Health Federal Pain Research Strategy (FPRS) has called for new models for pain management. This Perspective proposes the Pain Recovery and Integrative Systems Model (PRISM) as a new model that addresses the multidimensional nature of pain. PRISM is a salutogenic, integrative, process-based cognitive-behavioral model designed for physical therapist education and practice. PRISM ali...

Potential bias and lack of generalizability in electronic health record data: reflections on health equity from the National Institutes of Health Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory
J Am Med Inform Assoc. 2023 Jun 26:ocad115. doi: 10.1093/jamia/ocad115. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmbedded pragmatic clinical trials (ePCTs) play a vital role in addressing current population health problems, and their use of electronic health record (EHR) systems promises efficiencies that will increase the speed and volume of relevant and generalizable research. However, as the number of ePCTs using EHR-derived data grows, so does the risk that research will become more vulnerable to biases due to differences in data capture and access to care for different subsets of the population, thereby propagating inequities in...

Increased plasma levels of circPTP4A2 and circTLK2 are associated with stroke injury
Ann Clin Transl Neurol. 2023 Jun 23. doi: 10.1002/acn3.51837. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: Accumulating studies have shown that circulating circular RNAs (circRNAs) represent novel biomarkers for many human diseases. We investigated whether plasma circPTP4A2 and circTLK2 levels are associated with stroke severity, infarct volume, stroke etiology, and functional outcome in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients.METHODS: We applied quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) to measure plasma circPTP4A2 and circTLK2 levels of 236 AIS patients within 72 h of symptoms onset and 136 healthy controls. We further assessed the Nat...

Analysis of Academic Accomplishments and Demographics for Elected Presidents of National Orthopedic Surgery Organizations in the United States
This study analyzed the academic accomplishments and demographics of elected presidents of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Orthopaedic Association (AOA), and American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). Curriculum vitae and internet-based resources were reviewed to collect demographics, training characteristics, bibliometrics, and National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding of contemporary presidents (1990-2020). Eighty presidents were included. Most presidents were men (97%), and 4% of presidents were non-White (3% Black and 1% Hispanic). Few had an additional graduate degree (4% MB...
