Disparities in Multiple Myeloma Treatment Patterns in the United States: A Systematic Review
Clin Lymphoma Myeloma Leuk. 2023 Aug 13:S2152-2650(23)00255-0. doi: 10.1016/j.clml.2023.08.008. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe performed a systematic review of the literature investigating the demographic and insurance-related factors linked to disparities in multiple myeloma (MM) care patterns in the United States from 2003 to 2021. Forty-six observational studies were included. Disparities in MM care patterns were reported based on patient race in 76% of studies (34 out of 45 that captured race as a study variable), ethnicity in 60% (12 out of 20), insurance in 77% (17 out of 22), and distance from treating facility, u...

Health insurance, labor market shocks, and mental health during the first year of the COVID-19 crisis
Econ Hum Biol. 2023 Aug 23;51:101298. doi: 10.1016/j.ehb.2023.101298. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe use the Census Household Pulse Survey (HPS) to examine employment and earnings loss, health insurance, and hardships related to physical and mental health and health care, as well as food insecurity and difficulty meeting expenses, during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pandemic job loss is strongly associated with uninsurance in the HPS. Moreover, among those who were not employed due to a pandemic economic reason such as a business closure, we find substantial regression-adjusted differences in hardship by insu...

Discovery of first novel sigma/HDACi dual-ligands with a potent in vitro antiproliferative activity
Bioorg Chem. 2023 Aug 23;140:106794. doi: 10.1016/j.bioorg.2023.106794. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDesigning and discovering compounds for dual-target inhibitors is challenging to synthesize new, safer, and more efficient drugs than single-target drugs, especially to treat multifactorial diseases such as cancer. The simultaneous regulation of multiple targets might represent an alternative synthetic approach to optimize patient compliance and tolerance, minimizing the risk of target-based drug resistance due to the modulation of a few targets. To this end, we conceived for the first time the design and synthesis of dual...

Impacts of child sexual abuse: The mediating role of future orientation on academic outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: In support of existing research, we found child sexual abuse has a negative impact on positive future orientation, and positive future orientation contributes to better academic outcomes.PMID:37659153 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106437

Factors affecting retirement and workforce attrition in neurosurgery: results of a Council of State Neurosurgical Societies national survey
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that midcareer neurosurgeons may benefit from targeted retention efforts. This effort should focus on maximizing professional satisfaction and financial independence, while decreasing the regulatory burden associated with certification and insurance authorization. End-of-career surgeons should be surveyed to determine factors contributing to resilience and persistence within the neurosurgical workforce.PMID:37657112 | DOI:10.3171/2023.7.JNS231117

Social representations of gender and their influence in Supported Employment: employment specialists' experiences in Sweden
CONCLUSION: Social representations of higher strains on women with disabilities compared to men with disabilities both in private and working life, which reflect the lived experiences of the ESs, is a possible explanation for gender differences in VR and working life for persons with disabilities.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONGender differences in the outcomes of vocational rehabilitation (VR) interventions have been noticed worldwide. In this study, pervasive social representations about gender and disability in relation to VR were found, but also unconsciousness about gender among VR professionals. Therefore, awareness ...

Three-level ACDF versus 3-level laminectomy and fusion: are there differences in outcomes? An analysis of the Quality Outcomes Database cervical spondylotic myelopathy cohort
CONCLUSIONS: In a cohort limited to 3-level fusion surgical procedures, ACDF was associated with reduced blood loss, shorter hospitalization length, and higher routine home discharge rates; however, PCF resulted in lower rates of postoperative dysphagia. The procedures yielded comparably significant improvements in functional status (mJOA score), neck and arm pain, neck pain-related disability, and quality of life at 3, 12, and 24 months. ACDF patients had significantly higher odds of maximum satisfaction (NASS score 1). Given comparable outcomes, patients should be counseled on each approach's complication profile to aid ...
