Hepatitis B virus infection in patients with Wilson disease: A large retrospective study
CONCLUSION: The total prevalence of current HBV infection in patients with WD was 2.1%. The diagnosis of WD in CHB patients is usually missed. HBV infection is an independent risk factor for severe liver disease in WD patients. The diagnosis of WD should be ruled out in some patients with CHB infection.PMID:37701133 | PMC:PMC10494763 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v29.i32.4900

Maternal A90V mutation in the PreS1 gene of sub-genotype C2 hepatitis B virus is associated with intrauterine transmission
Rev Inst Med Trop Sao Paulo. 2023 Sep 8;65:e46. doi: 10.1590/S1678-9946202365046. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTPreS/S gene mutations could impact virus secretion, infection and immune evasion. However, the relationship between PreS/S mutations and intrauterine transmission has not yet been clarified. Thus, we aimed to explore the associations between PreS/S gene mutations of HBV isolated from mothers and intrauterine transmission. We analyzed the mutations of PreS/S regions of the HBV genome in mothers with HBV DNA levels ≥ 106 IU/mL whose neonates experienced HBV intrauterine transmission (transmission group, GT) and those ...

Observations in the Field Concerning Infection Control Practices in Dialysis
This article describes observations and findings related to infection prevention and control in dialysis facilities. Ensuring infection control best practices is critical for patient safety. Survey findings related to hand hygiene, disinfection practices, medication preparation and administration, central venous catheter management, and hepatitis B surveillance are reviewed. Implications for nephrology nursing in each scenario are discussed, including survey guidance for COVID-19 post-pandemic.PMID:37695516

Diagnostic performance of gadoxetic acid-enhanced abbreviated magnetic resonance imaging protocol in small hepatocellular carcinoma ( ≤2 cm) in high-risk patients
CONCLUSION: A-MRI using diagnostic criteria including hypointensity on hepatobiliary phase plus mild to moderate hyperintensity on T2-weighted imaging or restricted diffusion demonstrated comparable sensitivity and specificity for small HCC compared to the F-MRI protocol in high-risk patients.PMID:37691270 | DOI:10.1177/02841851231195567

Clinical, Gender, Socioeconomic Characteristics and Outcomes of Individuals Receiving Hepatitis B Treatment in Ethiopia: 18-Month Follow-Up
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Sep 11:tpmd230236. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0236. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere is a lack of real-world data on hepatitis B (HBV) treatment in Africa. We conducted a single-center 18-month prospective cohort study in Ethiopia to understand clinical, laboratory, and demographic variables associated with HBV treatment. One hundred fifty HBV-positive patients were included: 51 on treatment, 99 with no treatment. Median age was similar between groups. Those on treatment were more likely to be male (86%), report higher coffee intake (90% versus 70%, P < 0.05), lower khat intake (0% versus 9%, P = 0...

The hepatitis B virus pre-core protein p22 suppresses TNF α-induced apoptosis by regulating the NF-κB pathway
CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, HBV-p22, whereby the mechanism contributing to anti-apoptotic effect was regulation of the NF-κB pathway via enhancing the phosphorylation of IKKα.PMID:37692946 | PMC:PMC10492049
