Topical Calcipotriol Plus Imiquimod Immunotherapy for Nonkeratinocyte Skin Cancers
In this study, we demonstrate that topical TSLP cytokine inducers-calcipotriol and retinoic acid-synergize with IMQ to activate CD4+ T-cell immunity against nonkeratinocyte cutaneous malignancies. Topical calcipotriol plus IMQ treatment reduced breast tumor growth compared with calcipotriol or IMQ alone (P < 0.0001). Calcipotriol plus IMQ-mediated tumor suppression was associated with significant infiltration of CD4+ effector T cells in the tumor microenvironment. Notably, topical calcipotriol plus IMQ immunotherapy enabled immune checkpoint blockade therapy to effectively control immunologically cold breast tumors, whi...

Association between ultra-processed food consumption and risk of breast cancer: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of observational studies
CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that higher consumption of UPF is slightly related to a higher risk of breast cancer. Further studies in particular of large prospective cohort studies are warranted to confirm these results.PMID:37731393 | PMC:PMC10507475 | DOI:10.3389/fnut.2023.1250361

Tetrahydrobiopterin from cyanide-degrading bacterium Bacillus pumilus strain SVD06 induces apoptosis in human lung adenocarcinoma cell (A549)
Biotechnol Appl Biochem. 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1002/bab.2509. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) is an essential biological cofactor and a derivative of pterin which is considered potent anticancer agents. In continuation of our previous study on the identification of BH4 from cyanide-degrading Bacillus pumilus, the present study focuses on evaluating the anticancer properties of BH4 on A549, a human lung adenocarcinoma. Anticancer activity analysis shows that BH4 inhibited A549 cell growth after 24 h of incubation with 0.02 mg/mL. In acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining, BH4-treated A549 cells sho...

A randomized trial to evaluate the preventive effect of lafutidine on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in patients treated with carboplatin and paclitaxel for lung cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Although the preventive effect of lafutidine on CIPN could not be demonstrated statistically, lafutidine FACT/GOG-Ntx scores showed a trend toward decreased neurotoxicity as chemotherapy proceeded. More reliable studies using lafutidine on the prevention of CIPN should be conducted.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Japan Registry of Clinical Trials identifier: jRCTs021200031.PMID:37731302 | DOI:10.21037/apm-23-90

A Comparison of the effect of patient-specific vs. weight-based protocols to treat vaso-occlusive episodes (VOE) in the emergency department
CONCLUSIONS: We found a shorter ED length of stay for patients assigned to a PSP. Patients in both groups experienced good pain relief without significant side effects.PMID:37731093 | DOI:10.1111/acem.14805

Optimizing process flow diagrams to guide implementation of a colorectal cancer screening intervention in new settings
CONCLUSION: Process maps can potentially support decision-making about the adoption, implementation, and adaptation of existing EBIs in new contexts. Given the complexities involved in deciding whether and how to implement EBIs, these diagrams serve as visual, easily understood tools to inform potential future adopters of the EBI about the activities, resources, and staffing needed for implementation.PMID:37731072 | DOI:10.1007/s10552-023-01769-w

Staging of colorectal cancer using lipid biomarkers and machine learning
CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate that correlating multiple disease related features with lipid changes could improve CRC prognosis. The identified signatures could be used as reference biomarkers to predict CRC prognosis and classify stages, and monitor therapeutic intervention.PMID:37731020 | DOI:10.1007/s11306-023-02049-z

Cardiovascular Imaging in Contemporary Cardio-Oncology: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association
Circulation. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001174. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAdvances in cancer therapeutics have led to dramatic improvements in survival, now inclusive of nearly 20 million patients and rising. However, cardiovascular toxicities associated with specific cancer therapeutics adversely affect the outcomes of patients with cancer. Advances in cardiovascular imaging have solidified the critical role for robust methods for detecting, monitoring, and prognosticating cardiac risk among patients with cancer. However, decentralized evaluations have led to a lack of consensus on the optimal uses of ima...

Effectiveness of Tofacitinib in Pre-adolescent Alopecia Areata: A Retrospective Case Series and Literature Review
Acta Derm Venereol. 2023 Sep 20;103:adv13418. doi: 10.2340/actadv.v103.13418.ABSTRACTAlopecia areata (AA) is a common cause of hair loss in children. Despite numerous therapeutic options for paediatric AA, none have been found to be both effective and safe. Recent studies have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of the Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor tofacitinib in adult patients with AA, whereas data on paediatric patients with AA in real-world practice are limited. This was a single-centre, retrospective study that included 11 pre-adolescent patients with AA treated with tofacitinib between December 2021 and September 2022...
