Mediacalcosis in hemodialysis, predictors and prognosis
ConclusionMediacalcosis is a severe complication since it increases the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in hemodialysis patients, to this end, the individualization of entangled factors involved in its pathophysiology, will slow down or prevent its progression in the future.

Type A aortic dissection in patients over the age of seventy in the UK
ConclusionsATAD is a life ‐threatening condition with a high mortality rate if left untreated. Our results show that surgery for ATAD in patients over 70 is feasible with acceptable mortality rates. However, similar to previous studies, rates of stroke in older patients may be higher. The present study supports the notion that age should not be a discriminating factor in operating on patients with TAAD.

Prognostic significance of right ventricular hypertrophy and systolic function in Anderson –Fabry disease
ConclusionsRVH and RV systolic function show significant association with clinical events in AFD, but only proteinuria and left ventricular mass index emerged as independent predictors of outcome. Our findings suggest that RV involvement does not influence prognosis in AFD and confirm that renal involvement and left ventricular hypertrophy are the main determinant of major cardiac and non ‐cardiac events.

Direct Oral Anticoagulant Use in Special Populations: Elderly, Obesity, and Renal Failure
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe purpose of this review is to examine the safety and effectiveness of direct oral anticoagulants and provide recommendations for the treatment of venous thromboembolism and atrial fibrillation in obese patients, elderly patients, and patients with chronic kidney disease.Recent FindingsMultiple retrospective cohort studies have shown no difference in bleeding, stroke, or venous thromboembolism outcomes between DOACs and warfarin in patients who are obese, elderly, or those with chronic kidney disease or on dialysis. Some studies have shown that DOACs have a lower bleeding risk than warfarin in th...

Valuing health states of people with type  2 diabetes: Analyses of the nationwide representative linked databases
ConclusionsMajor vascular complications, connective tissue disease and depression are associated with considerably worse health ‐related quality of life. These health utility estimates can facilitate health economic evaluations to determine cost‐effective strategies for diabetes management.

Survival outcomes and adverse events in patients with chronic kidney disease after coronary artery bypass grafting and percutaneous coronary intervention: a meta-analysis of propensity score-matching studies
CONCLUSIONS: Our propensity score matching analysis revealed that, based on long-term follow-up outcomes, CABG remains superior to PCI in patients with CKD.PMID:33781160 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2021.1903928

Prasugrel and Ticagrelor in Patients with Drug-Eluting Stents and Kidney Failure
CONCLUSIONS: Prasugrel or ticagrelor does not seem to be associated with significant benefits compared with clopidogrel in patients with kidney failure treated with drug-eluting stents.PODCAST: This article contains a podcast at https://www.asn-online.org/media/podcast/CJASN/2021_04_02_CJN12120720.mp3.PMID:33811128 | DOI:10.2215/CJN.12120720

Risk Factors Associated with All-Cause Death Among Dialysis Patients with Diabetes
CONCLUSIONS Deceased patients had higher HbA1c and fructosamine levels and higher comorbidity. However, history of stroke or transient ischemic attack was an independent risk factor of all-cause death, while regular physical activity was associated with the reduction of the risk of all-cause death in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes treated with peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis. Regular physical activity should be recommended to improve survival in this population.PMID:34023847 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.930152

Association of Iso-Osmolar vs Low-Osmolar Contrast Media With Major Adverse Renal or Cardiovascular Events in Patients at High Risk for Acute Kidney Injury Undergoing Endovascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair
CONCLUSIONS: Use of IOCM vs LOCM in patients at high risk of AKI undergoing EVAR procedures was associated with a lower risk of MARCE. As prevention of AKI or cardiovascular events after EVAR procedures may lead to reduced morbidity and mortality, this finding may have important clinical implications and should be confirmed through randomized controlled clinical studies.PMID:34280892
