Thrombolytic Recanalization of Carotid Arteries Is Highly Dependent on Degree of Stenosis, Despite Sonothrombolysis Stroke
Conclusions In this model, the degree of carotid stenosis had a large effect on thrombolytic recanalization. Sonothrombolysis using standard parameters for intracranial sonothrombolysis did not increase recanalization. Further testing is warranted. The degree of underlying stenosis may be an important predictor of thrombolytic recanalization, and clinical correlation of these findings may provide new approaches to treatment selection for patients with carotid occlusion.

Giant cell arteritis-related stroke in a large inception cohort: A comparative study
CONCLUSIONS: The location of stroke and assessment of ECU results and CRP level could help improve the prognosis of GCA-related stroke by bringing this condition to the clinician's attention more quickly, thus shortening diagnostic delay.PMID:35512621 | DOI:10.1016/j.semarthrit.2022.152020

Analysis of Carotid Ultrasound Screening of High-Risk Groups of Stroke Based on Big Data Technology
J Healthc Eng. 2022 Jan 25;2022:6363691. doi: 10.1155/2022/6363691. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTIn order to understand detection of carotid atherosclerosis in the screening of high-risk stroke populations in a certain area of China, we have analyzed related risk factors of CAS. In accordance with the requirements of the "2015 Technical Plan for the Screening and Intervention Projects for High-Risk Stroke Populations," a cluster sampling method was used to select 4532 (number of screened persons from 2015 to 2021) permanent residents over 41 years old () in Shaheying Town, Liulin Town, Chenggu County, Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Pr...

Multimodal ultrasound-based carotid plaque risk biomarkers predict poor functional outcome in patients with ischemic stroke or TIA
CONCLUSION: Intraplaque neovascularization level and plaque stiffness may be associated with an increased risk of poor short-term functional outcome after stroke in patients with recent anterior circulation ischemic stroke due to carotid atherosclerosis. The combined application of multiple parameters has efficacy in predicting poor short-term functional outcome after stroke.PMID:36631804 | DOI:10.1186/s12883-023-03052-6

Omentin-1 is Associated with Carotid Plaque Instability among Ischemic Stroke Patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Among ischemic stroke patients, higher omentin-1 levels were inversely associated with carotid plaque instability, but not associated with moderate-severe carotid stenosis or occlusion. Omentin-1 may represent a biomarker for predicting carotid plaque instability of acute ischemic stroke patients. PMID: 29225325 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Association of Carotid Plaque Size, Carotid Intima-Media Thickness, Resistive Index, and Pulsatility Index With Acute Ischemic Stroke
CONCLUSION: CIMT was significantly thicker among the patients with ischemic stroke compared to the control group. RI in the left CCA was significantly greater among the stroke patients than in the control group. The age of the patient and smoking habit had an association with RI and PI values. Most of the parameters were found to be significant on the left side, suggesting carotid atherosclerosis may not be symmetrical. A large-scale further study is needed to see the association of these variables with ischemic stroke patients.PMID:37546130 | PMC:PMC10401067 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.41384

Clinical usefulness of carotid ultrasound to improve stroke risk assessment: ten-year results from the Carotid Atherosclerosis Progression Study (CAPS)
Conclusions: When carotid ultrasound is not restricted to the common carotid artery but includes the internal carotid segments, the inclusion of ultrasound data into stroke risk models may improve the risk classification of individuals. Further validation in primary prevention cohorts is warranted.

Associations of Endogenous Estradiol and Testosterone Levels with Plaque Composition and Risk of Stroke in Subjects with Carotid Atherosclerosis.
Conclusions: TE was associated with presence of vulnerable carotid plaque as well as increased risk of stroke in women, whereas no consistent associations were found for TT in either sex. PMID: 29097437 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A Special Report on Changing Trends in Preventive Stroke/Cardiovascular Risk Assessment Via B-Mode Ultrasonography
AbstractPurpose of ReviewCardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke risk assessment have been largely based on the success of traditional statistically derived risk calculators such as Pooled Cohort Risk Score or Framingham Risk Score. However, over the last decade, automated computational paradigms such as machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques have penetrated into a variety of medical domains including CVD/stroke risk assessment. This review is mainly focused on the changing trends in CVD/stroke risk assessment and its stratification from statistical-based models to ML-based paradigms using non-invasive car...

The role of echocardiography in the embolic stroke of undetermined source
Echocardiography plays an important role both in the diagnosis and the treatment/prevention of embolic stroke of undetermined source and should be performed as soon as possible for preventing ischemic stroke recurrencies, which occur more frequently during the first week after the first ischemic event. Early identification of the cause of a transient ischemic attack or stroke is indeed a primary goal for the neurologist in the Stroke Unit and requires specific diagnostic strategies. Echocardiography, together with other diagnostic tools such as carotid and transcranial ultrasounds, provides this information promptly. In pa...

Omentin Is Independently Associated with Stroke Severity and Ipsilateral Carotid Artery Stenosis in Patients with Acute Cerebral Ischemia
J Clin Med. 2021 Dec 11;10(24):5797. doi: 10.3390/jcm10245797.ABSTRACTMounting evidence indicates an association between adipokines and inflammation-related atherosclerosis. Here, we sought to investigate the association of vaspin and omentin with clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with acute cerebral ischemia (ACI). Consecutive ACI patients were evaluated within 24 h from symptom-onset. Stroke aetiology was classified using TOAST criteria. Adipokines were assayed using quantikine enzyme immunoassay commercially available kits. Stroke severity was assessed by NIHSS-score, and ipsilateral carotid stenosis (â‰...

Point-of-care ultrasound for stroke patients in the emergency room
J Med Ultrason (2001). 2022 Feb 3. doi: 10.1007/s10396-021-01185-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke requires rapid determination of the cause to provide timely and appropriate initial management. Various ultrasonographic techniques have been evaluated as ways to determine the cause of stroke; among them, carotid artery ultrasonography is particularly useful since it provides considerable information within a short time period when used to evaluate a specific site. In the emergency room, carotid artery ultrasonography can be used to diagnose internal carotid artery stenosis, predict an occluded vessel, and infer the ca...
