Perioperative Quality Initiative and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery-Cardiac Society Consensus Statement on the Management of Preoperative Anemia and Iron Deficiency in Adult Cardiac Surgery Patients
Anesth Analg. 2022 Sep 1;135(3):532-544. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006148. Epub 2022 Aug 17.ABSTRACTPreoperative anemia is common in patients presenting for cardiac surgery, with a prevalence of approximately 1 in 4, and has been associated with worse outcomes including increased risk of blood transfusion, kidney injury, stroke, infection, and death. Iron deficiency, a major cause of anemia, has also been shown to have an association with worse outcomes in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, even in the absence of anemia. Although recent guidelines have supported diagnosing and treating anemia and iron deficiency before ...

A practical guide for perioperative smoking cessation
AbstractThe perioperative management of patients who are smokers presents anesthesiologists with various challenges related to respiratory, circulatory, and other clinical problems. Regarding 30-day postoperative outcomes, smokers have higher risks of mortality and complications than non-smokers, including death, pneumonia, unplanned tracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Given the benefits of smoking cessation and the adverse effects of smoking on perioperative patient management, patients should quit smoking long before surgery. However, anesthesiologists cannot ad...

Anesthetic considerations for endovascular treatment in stroke therapy
Purpose of review The introduction of clot removement by endovascular treatment (EVT) in 2015 has improved the clinical outcome of patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to a large vessel occlusion (LVO). Anesthetic strategies during EVT vary widely between hospitals, with some departments employing local anesthesia (LA), others performing conscious sedation (CS) or general anesthesia (GA). The optimal anesthetic strategy remains debated. This review will describe the effects of anesthetic strategy on clinical and radiological outcomes and hemodynamic parameters in patients with AIS undergoing EVT. Recent fin...

Outcomes of patients admitted to the ICU for acute stroke: a retrospective cohort
Although acute stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, data on outcomes of stroke patients requiring ICU admission are limited. We aimed to identify factors associated with a good neuro...

Use and safety of aprotinin in routine clinical practice: A European postauthorisation safety study conducted in patients undergoing cardiac surgery
CONCLUSION The data in the NApaR indicated that in this patient population, at high risk of death or blood loss undergoing cardiac surgery, including complex cardiac surgeries other than iCABG, the incidence of adverse events is in line with data from current literature, where aprotinin was not used. Effect of norepinephrine on blood volume, cardiac output, and systemic filling pressure in patients undergoing liver transplantation
CONCLUSIONS: The norepinephrine infusion at 0.1 μg-1 kg-1 min-1 is associated with an increase in CO in patients with liver cirrhosis undergoing liver transplantation. Norepinephrine's effect on CO was primarily attributable to an increase in venous return due to an increase in mean systemic filling pressure.PMID:35833856 | DOI:10.23736/S0375-9393.22.16526-0
