Evaluation of risk factors, functionalities, and quality of life in patients with pediatric acute arterial ischemic stroke
CONCLUSIONS: Determining the etiology and evaluating prognosis are important to plan effective treatment and rehabilitation for pediatric acute arterial ischemic stroke.PMID:37114696 | DOI:10.24953/turkjped.2022.350

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor and neuroimaging in pediatric patients with sickle cell disease
CONCLUSION: Serum BDNF levels were higher in sickle disease patients who had abnormal transcranial Doppler. BDNF had a significant diagnostic ability in the detection of SCD complications.IMPACT: Silent stroke is a very serious complication in children with sickle cell disease, so regular follow up should be every six months. BDNF is considered a potential biomarker for stroke risk prediction in patients unable to receive TCD.PMID:36774398 | DOI:10.1038/s41390-023-02513-5

Early predictors of neurodevelopment after perinatal arterial ischemic stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Corticospinal tract assessment on MRI and standardized motor assessments are best to predict cerebral palsy after PAIS. Future research should be focused on improving outcome prediction for non-motor outcomes.IMPACT: We present a systematic review of early predictors for various long-term outcome categories after perinatal arterial ischemic stroke (PAIS), including a meta-analysis for the outcome unilateral spastic cerebral palsy. Corticospinal tract assessment on MRI and standardized motor assessments are best to predict cerebral palsy after PAIS, while bedside techniques such as (a)EEG and NIRS might improve ...

Is This Primary Exertional Headache?
Discussion Commonly occurring primary headaches include tension, cluster and migraine headaches. “Other primary headaches” are often situational. Patients can have more than 1 type of these “other” headaches along with more common headaches. Other primary headaches as a group tend to be self-limited with long remission periods. Some other primary headaches include: Thunderclap headache Explosive sudden onset with maximum intensity in less 1 minute and resolution within 5 minutes usually 43/100,000 persons in adults Primary or secondary Secondary causes include intracranial hemorrhage, stroke, thro...

Cardiovascular outcomes in children with Kawasaki disease: a population-based cohort study
CONCLUSION: KD survivors are at increased risk of post-discharge cardiovascular events but have a lower risk of death, which justifies enhanced cardiovascular disease surveillance in these patients.IMPACT: Among 4597 Kawasaki disease (KD) survivors, 79 (1.7%) experienced major adverse cardiac events (MACE) and 632 (13.8%) had composite cardiovascular events during 11-year median follow-up. KD survivors had significantly higher risks of post-discharge MACE and cardiovascular events versus non-exposed children. Only nine KD survivors (0.2%) died during follow-up, and the risk of mortality was significantly lower among KD sur...

Imaging spectrum of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation related neurologic events in children
CONCLUSIONS: Our series revealed PRES in ECMO-related neurologic events in addition to commonly reported thrombotic and hemorrhagic stroke in the literature. Availability of cross-sectional imaging and awareness of radiologists to these complications during ECMO or after weaning help in prompt diagnosis and treatment.PMID:36305438 | DOI:10.24953/turkjped.2022.323
