Assesment of Cerebral Blood Flow Velocities with Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography in Heart Failure Patients with Reduced Ejection Fraction
Heart and brain interaction is a well-known entity in heart failure (HF) and left ventricular systolic dysfunction poses an increased risk for stroke and cognitive impairment. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) provides valuable information on cerebral blood flow velocities (CBFV). However, less is known about CBFV in HF patients with reduced EF. So, we aimed to evaluate CBFV by means of TCD in patients with HF and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Health-related quality of life after ischemic stroke: impact of sociodemographic and clinical factors
CONCLUSION: Stroke survivors have significantly reduced HR-QoL. Multiple interacting factors are associated with an unfavorable outcome after IS. Early detection of these factors would help to improve the care for IS patients, to reduce disabilities and improve HR-QoL.PMID:33637026 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2021.1893563

The Joint Association of Septicemia and Cerebrovascular Diseases with In-Hospital MortalityAmong Patients with Left Ventricular Assist Device in the United States
Currently, about 6.2 million adults in the US are reported to have heart failure, and this prevalence is expected to increase by 46% by 2030.1 The prognosis of advanced heart failure especially, advanced systolic heart failure, has improved tremendously with the advent of implantable mechanical circulatory support devices such as left ventricular assist device (LVAD) which is often used as a bridge to heart transplantation or as a destination therapy.2,3 Indeed, LVAD has improved the 1-year survival of patients with advanced heart disease from 52% to about 85%.

Association between Pre-Existing Coronary Artery Disease and 5-Year Mortality in Stroke Patients with High-Grade Carotid Artery Stenosis
Conclusion: Pre-existing CAD was associated with an increased risk of 5-year mortality in acute IS patients with high-grade CAS. Intensive treatment for the pre-existing CAD may reduce long-term mortality in acute IS patients with high-grade CAS.Eur Neurol

Red Blood Cell Distribution Width as a 5-Year Prognostic Marker in Patients Submitted to Carotid Endarterectomy
Conclusion: RDW is a widely available and low-cost marker that independently predicts long-term mortality, MACE, and MI after CEA. This biomarker could prove useful in assessing which patients would likely benefit from CEA in the long term.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2020;10:181 –192

Outcome Predictors of Stroke Mortality in the Neurocritical Care Unit
Conclusions: Our analysis showed that mortality risk in critically ill patients with hemorrhagic stroke was closer to mortality risk in patients with ischemic stroke than has been reported in other analyses. Hypertension, chronic heart failure, ischemic heart disease and atrial fibrillation were the most frequent comorbidities in patients who developed severe (life-threatening) stroke. Coma and cerebral edema on admission appear to be associated with poor outcome. This is the first publication of in-hospital stroke mortality from a Central Asian population and could form the basis for future research including development ...

Management of Intracranial Hemorrhage in Patients with a Left Ventricular Assist Device: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) therapy serves as a surgically implanted form of mechanical circulation in patients with advanced heart failure. Initially designed to provide a bridge to transplant, LVADs now offer an alternative that is increasingly utilized as final destination therapy as the need for donor hearts increases worldwide.1,2 However, this requires lifelong anticoagulation (AC) to prevent pump thrombosis, resulting in hemorrhagic risks.3

Air Pollution, Cardiovascular Disease, and Dementia
To the Editor In a recent issue, Grande et al contribute to an emerging body of evidence suggesting that exposure to air pollution may increase the risk of dementia. The authors reported that elevated long-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide and fine particles is linked to an increased risk of dementia, which is aligned with prior research. They also examined the role of cardiovascular disease (CVD) subtypes as effect modifiers and intermediates in this association, building on previous findings. The authors reported evidence of outcome heterogeneity by heart failure and ischemic heart disease and mediation by stroke. Evalua...

Association Between Motor and Cognitive Performances in Elderly With Atrial Fibrillation: Strat-AF Study
Conclusions: In our cohort of elderly AF patients, a direct association between motor and cognitive functions consistently recurred using different evaluation of the performances, without an evident mediating role of cerebral lesions burden.

Prevalence, Predictors, and Outcomes of Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation After Endovascular Stroke Therapy
ConclusionsAmong a nationally representative sample of hospitalizations, nearly one-in-six patients had prolonged mechanical ventilation after EVT. Heart failure and diabetes were significantly associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation following EVT. Prolonged ventilation was associated with significant increase in in-hospital mortality and morbidity.

Deiodinases, organic anion transporter polypeptide polymorphisms and symptoms of anxiety and depression after ischemic stroke
Mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression, are common after stroke. It was reported, that post-stroke anxiety cumulative incidence reached 57% within the first ten years after stroke was experienced.1 This mental health problem after stroke leads to impaired quality of life1 and poorer activity of daily living.2 Recent meta-analysis established, that the risk of stroke in a person with symptoms of anxiety is even higher compared to the risk of coronary heart disease or heart failure.3 Moreover, anxiety disorder comorbid with symptoms of depression after stroke was associated with increased lethal outcomes.
