Restless legs syndrome/Willis-Ekbom disease among patients with resistant hypertension versus stroke patients-a prospective study
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated a high prevalence of RLS among patients with resistant hypertension. RLS characteristics are different from those in patients with stroke, and very similar to primary RLS.PMID:34716522 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-021-02490-1

Adherence to positive airway pressure therapy initiated in the early subacute phase of ischemic stroke: a PRESS study follow-up
CONCLUSIONS: Less than half of the stroke subjects remained adherent to PAP therapy at 6 months post-PAP initiation. Special attention to support adaptation and adherence to PAP treatment is needed in this group of patients.PMID:36198999 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-022-02722-y

Post-stroke depression in Vietnamese patients is associated with decreased sleep quality and increased fatigue: a one-institution cross-sectional analysis
CONCLUSION: There is a significant prevalence of depression following stroke. Furthermore, post-stroke fatigue and two PSQI scale components (subjective sleep quality and sleep disturbance) were shown to be associated with PSD. This finding may guide early screening and intervention strategies to address depression following stroke.PMID:36434377 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-022-02745-5

Functional recovery after ischemic stroke: Impact of different sleep health parameters
J Sleep Res. 2023 Jun 20:e13964. doi: 10.1111/jsr.13964. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSleep disturbances after ischaemic stroke include alterations of sleep architecture, obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, daytime sleepiness and insomnia. Our aim was to explore their impacts on functional outcomes at month 3 after stroke, and to assess the benefit of continuous positive airway pressure in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea. Ninety patients with supra-tentorial ischaemic stroke underwent clinical screening for sleep disorders and polysomnography at day 15 ± 4 after stroke in a multisite study. Pati...

Up-to-date advance in the relationship between OSA and stroke: a narrative review
CONCLUSION: Both the onset and recurrence of stroke closely correlated with OSA, but the specific mechanisms remain unclear. Further studies should be carried out to explore effective treatments in patients with stroke and OSA.PMID:37632670 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-023-02904-2

The Effect of Sleep Disordered Breathing on the Outcome of Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack: A Systematic Review
Conclusions:Existing studies provide sufficient data to establish obstructive SDB as a negative predictor of all-cause mortality and recurrent vascular events following stroke or TIA. The ability of CPAP treatment to lower the risk of serious adverse outcomes after stroke remains controversial because of substantial risk of bias identified in most of the eligible studies addressing this relation. Additional studies are needed.Citation:Birkbak J; Clark AJ; Rod NH. The effect of sleep disordered breathing on the outcome of stroke and transient ischemic attack: a systematic review. SOS score: an optimized score to screen acute stroke patients for obstructive sleep apnea
Conclusions: The SOS score administered to relatives of stroke patients is a useful tool to screen for OSA and may decrease the need for PSG in acute stroke setting.

Association of Sleep Disordered Breathing with Wake-Up Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Full Polysomnographic Study
Conclusions:Although the design of our study does not prove the causal relationship between SDB and WUS, higher severity of SDB parameters in WUS supports this hypothesis.Commentary:A commentary on this article appears in this issue on page 467.Citation:Šiarnik P, Kollár B, Čarnická Z, Šurda P, Klobučníková K, Sýkora M, Turčáni P.
