Blog: We must stop the government removing your rights without debate, oversight or a vote
Yesterday the government published the “Reform Bill”, which outlines how EU legislation will be converted into UK law. Like many organisations, UNISON has real concerns about the legislation, in particular that it places too much power in the hands of the government and far too little power in the hands of Parliament and the people. This isn’t taking back control – this is a blatant power grab by a weakened Prime Minister. It’s completely unacceptable for important legislation on employment rights to be in the hands of ministers rather than Parliament. Under the Bill as it currently stands – thanks to so-calle...

Process cycle optimization in press forming of paperboard
Three‐dimensional forming of paperboard is commonly done by a press forming process, which has been widely researched. However, the process cycle of the press forming of paperboard trays has not yet been completely optimized due to limited adjustability and unsophisticated mechanical structure of commonly used forming equipment. The object of this study is to optimize the force curve of stroke to improve product quality without compromising the production rate using LUT Adjustable Packaging Line prototype for practical evaluation of formability and multibody dynamics software MSC Adams for simulation. Several process par...

Technological solutions for reducing impact and content of health sensitive nutrients in food
Publication date: Available online 7 February 2017 Source:Trends in Food Science & Technology Author(s): Stefan Palzer Ischaemic Heart Disease, Stroke and Diabetes Mellitus are accounting for more than 15 Mio deaths/year and are thus amongst the globally leading death causes. All three diseases are co-morbidities of obesity. They are impacted by genetics, epigenetics and diet and were linked in numerous studies with the excessive intake of sodium, low-molecular weight sugar, trans-fats, saturated fats and total energy consumed. Accordingly these food components are considered to be health sensitive ingredients and...

UPEI-400, a conjugate of lipoic acid and scopoletin, mediates neuroprotection in a rat model of ischemia/reperfusion.
Abstract Previously, our laboratory provided evidence that lipoic acid (LA) covalently bonded to various antioxidants, resulted in enhanced neuroprotection compared to LA on its own. The naturally occurring compound scopoletin, a coumarin derivative, has been shown in various in vitro studies to have both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanism of actions. The present investigation was designed to determine if scopoletin on its own, or a co-drug consisting of LA and scopoletin covalently bonded together, named UPEI-400, would be capable of demonstrating a similar neuroprotective efficacy. Using a rat stroke mo...

Brexit cannot be an excuse to trash our rights at work
Last night MPs held their first debate on the terms of Britain’s exit from the EU. Unsurprisingly given recent events, Article 50 was high on the agenda. But crucially, the debate also revolved around the rights at work that we enjoy as part of our EU membership. Workplace rights was at the heart of UNISON’s campaign to keep Britain in the EU. We may have lost that argument, but our concerns remain. Before the referendum UNISON members told us that rights at work were their top priority – and in the aftermath, preserving those rights has been one of our top priorities. The government have tried to claim that our righ...

Functional Food and dietary supplements For Lung Health
Conclusions This plant metabolites benefits lung health by anti-inflammatory, immune-modulatory, and antioxidant effects. Many pungent flavor components in edible plants activate the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract to help fight microbes and remove undesirable agents. These flavor and aroma compounds can behave as expectorants, decongestant, antitussive, and antimicrobial agents. They enhance mucous membrane secretion, kill pathogens, reduce inflammation and decrease mucous viscosity by weakening the hydrogen bonds in the mucous. For lung cancer, certain plant metabolites help induce apoptosis, suppress angiogene...

Modification of Sodium Release Using Porous Corn Starch and Lipoproteic Matrix
Abstract Excessive sodium consumption can result in hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases, stroke, and kidney diseases. Various chips and extruded snacks, where salt is mainly applied on the product surface, accounted for almost 56% of snacks retail sales in 2010. Hence, it is important to target sodium reduction for those snack products. Past studies had shown that modifying the rate‐release mechanism of sodium is a promising strategy for sodium reduction in the food industry. Encapsulation of salt can be a possible technique to control sodium release rate. Porous corn starch (PCS), created by enzymatic treatment and s...

Calcium intake, calcium homeostasis and health
Publication date: Available online 1 February 2016 Source:Food Science and Human Wellness Author(s): Fan Pu, Ning Chen, Shenghui Xue Calcium, as the most abundant mineral in human body, is involved in many physiological and pathological processes. Here, we reviewed the key mechanisms of calcium homeostasis, including calcium sensing receptor regulation, intestinal calcium absorption, renal calcium reabsorption and bone calcium resorption. We further discussed the roles of dietary calcium and vitamin D in diseases associated with dysfunctional regulation of calcium. However, the over-dosed consumption of calcium could ...

Bioactive peptides on endothelial function
Publication date: Available online 29 December 2015 Source:Food Science and Human Wellness Author(s): Subhadeep Chakrabarti, Jianping Wu Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) such as myocardial infarction and stroke are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Impairment of the normal vasorelaxant functions of the vascular endothelium, termed endothelial dysfunction; appear to underlie the pathogenesis of CVD. Endothelial dysfunction is often secondary to abnormal increases in oxidative stress, inflammation and overactivity of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), which makes these pathways attractive targets for ther...
