Severity of stenosis in symptomatic patients undergoing carotid interventions might influence perioperative neurologic events
We examined the association of carotid artery stenosis severity with the outcomes for symptomatic patients who had undergone carotid intervention, including carotid endarterectomy (CEA), transfemoral carotid artery stenting (TFCAS), and transcervical carotid artery revascularization (TCAR).

Carotid Endarterectomy Prior to Ventricular Assist Device Placement in a Patient with Cardiogenic Shock
Atherosclerotic disease in the cervical vessels may be a contraindication for implantation of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). The occurrence of ischemic stroke represents an obstacle to rehabilitation, and its incidence seems to be higher in this population. Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is a preferable surgical treatment in patients with high bleeding risk. This case report suggests that CEA followed by implantation of LVADs can be feasible.

Carotid Plaque Imaging: Strategies beyond Stenosis
Ann Indian Acad Neurol. 2022 Jan-Feb;25(1):11-14. doi: 10.4103/aian.aian_483_21. Epub 2021 Aug 23.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis at the carotid bifurcation in the neck is common and the result of turbulent hemodynamics in the bulb. Carotid bulb plaques cause disabling strokes. Carotid vessel wall imaging characterizes the atherosclerotic plaque, documents disease progression, and assesses lesion severity by plaque morphology in addition to the degree of stenosis. This in turn optimizes treatment selection for the individual patient. The aim of vessel wall imaging in patients of stroke is to distinguish stable plaques that may be ...

A Stepwise Protocol to Reduce Haematoma Rates in Carotid Endarterectomy
Introduction: Stroke is the leading cause of long term disability in developed countries, with symptomatic carotid artery stenosis causing 25% of ischaemic strokes. Timely carotid endarterectomy (CEA) for significant stenosis reduces the risk of further strokes. Haematoma is a complication of CEA, especially in patients on dual antiplatelet therapy. Haematoma can result in stroke, death, and prolonged hospital stay. To date there has been limited research on protocols that can prevent this complication.

common carotid artery endovascular clamping associated to flow inversion for neuroprotection improves the carotid stenting outcomes
Carotid artery stenosis causes up to 30% of ischemic strokes and it is a potentially life-threatening pathology1. For “higher risk” patients, carotid artery stenting (CAS) has demonstrated similar results in terms of 30-day stroke and death rates than carotid endarterectomy (CEA) 1. However, despite its less invasive nature, CAS embolic events can reach 90%1.

Central retinal artery occlusion: a retrospective study of disease presentation, treatment, and outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: The majority of patients with CRAO presented to eye care providers, and few present within the potential window for thrombolysis of 4.5 hours, highlighting the need for public awareness strategies. Our cohort highlights the significant rate of systemic comorbidity that exists in these patients.PMID:35307340 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcjo.2022.02.015

Utilization of CT angiography of the head and neck in the era of endovascular therapy for acute ischemic stroke: a retrospective study
ConclusionLittle is known of the impacts on healthcare resources that have resulted from the system-wide changes made necessary by the widespread adoption of EVT. Our study shows that at our site, these system changes have resulted in large increases in CTA utilization with very small numbers of patients ultimately undergoing EVT or carotid intervention.

Usefulness of rapid MR angiography using two-point Dixon for evaluating carotid and aortic plaques
ConclusionThis study showed that LAVA-Flex successfully detected carotid and aortic plaques. This imaging technique may be useful to rapidly diagnose and evaluate carotid and aortic plaques, which are critical risk factors for aortogenic stroke.
