A one-year longitudinal evaluation of cerebrospinal fluid and blood neurochemical markers in a patient with cryptococcal meningitis complicated by ischemic stroke.
Cryptococcal meningitis (CCM) is caused by the encapsulated basidiomycetous yeast Cryptococcus neoformans and is one of the most common central nervous system (CNS) infections in immunocompromised subjects [1 –4]. In this regard, autoimmune diseases, sarcoidosis, glucocorticoid treatment, solid-organ transplantation, hematologic malignancies, diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure are well-known predisposing factors for CCM in HIV-negative patients [1–4]. Sources of C. neoformans are excrement of b irds such as pigeons, contaminated soil, and the bark of several tree species [1].

Hydroxyurea Therapy Does Not Impact Current Survival Estimates in the East London Sickle Cell Newborn Cohort Study
Conclusions: The study is the first to evaluate survival in a newborn cohort past the age of 20 years. We have confirmed a low mortality rate in childhood, but increased number of deaths in young adults including those with HbSC. This study provides evidence of the benefit of newborn screening and comprehensive care which is accessible at all ages, free of charge. Neurological complications in renal transplant patients: A single-center experience
Conclusion We conclude that complications involving the neurological system occur in 10.5% of all transplant patients with 8% involving CNS and 7% involving the PNS. The high mortality rates associated with CNS complications warrant early diagnosis and aggressive treatment in renal transplant recipients.
