Severe paraneoplastic hypoglycemia secondary to a gastrointestinal stromal tumour masquerading as a stroke.
We report the case of a 70-year-old previously healthy female who presented acutely to the Accident and Emergency department with left-sided vasomotor symptoms including reduced muscle tone, weakness upon walking and slurred speech. Physical examination confirmed hemiparesis with VIIth nerve palsy and profound hepatomegaly. A random glucose was low at 1.7 mmol/l, which upon correction resolved her symptoms. 9. Prevalence and impact of carotid disease in adult Saudi patients undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass surgery on early post-operative outcome
Conclusion The Presence of carotid artery disease in Saudi patients undergoing cardiac surgery is associated with increased prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, cerebro-vascular accidents and peripheral vascular disease. It is also a major determinant of adverse outcome after coronary surgery.

Although subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissues differed in their association with CRF levels and absolute event rates, lower baseline CRF in type 2 diabetics was significantly associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction or stroke, regardless of abdominal adiposity pattern.

Myocardial glucose uptake in patients with the m.3243A > G mutation in mitochondrial DNA
Abstract
Mitochondrial mutations impair glucose oxidation and increase glucose uptake in cell cultures and lead to cardiomyopathy in patients. Here we characterize cardiac glucose uptake in 14 patients with the m.3243A > G mutation in mitochondrial DNA. The 14 patients with m.3243A > G and 13 controls were similar in age, physical activity and body mass index. Ten patients had diabetes. Age dependency of ischaemic stroke subtypes and vascular risk factors in western Norway: the Bergen Norwegian Stroke Cooperation Study
ConclusionThe proportion of stroke subtypes and vascular risk factors are age dependent. Age 50–74 years constitutes the period in life where cardiovascular risk factors become manifest and stroke subtypes change.
