Predictors of Poor Outcome in Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome: Retrospective Analysis of Nationwide Inpatient Sample (S32.006)
CONCLUSIONS: In patients admitted for neuroleptic malignant syndrome, every decade increment in age, acute kidney injury, seizures and respiratory failure were positive predictors of poor outcome. Every calendar year increase was a negative predictor of poor outcome. Study Supported by:Disclosure: Dr. Modi has nothing to disclose. Dr. Dharaiya has nothing to disclose.

Predictors of Poor Outcome in Bacterial Meningitis: Retrospective Analysis of Nationwide Inpatient Sample (P5.046)
CONCLUSIONS: In this retrospective study, every decade increase in age, teaching hospital status and development of complications like hydrocephalus, ischemic stroke, seizures, intracranial abscess and respiratory failure were predictors of poor outcome. Every calendar year increase was a negative predictor of poor outcome. Study Supported by:Disclosure: Dr. Dharaiya has nothing to disclose. Dr. Modi has nothing to disclose. Propensity Adjusted Analysis of Open and Endovascular Thoracic Aortic Repair for Chronic Type B Dissection: A Twenty-Year Evaluation
Conclusions Intervention for CBAD can be performed with excellent results, either by an open or endovascular approach. The higher rate of treatment failure after TEVAR warrants modification of current device design or endovascular approach before broad application of this treatment strategy.

The Epidemiology of Chronic Critical Illness in the United States*
Conclusions: Using a consensus-based definition, the prevalence, hospital mortality, and costs of chronic critical illness are substantial. Chronic critical illness is particularly common in the elderly although in very old patients the prevalence declines, in part because of an increase in early mortality among potentially eligible patients.

Mechanical Ventilation for Acute Stroke: A Multi-state Population-Based Study
Conclusions In this large population-based sample, over half of mechanically ventilated stroke patients died in the hospital despite the fact that younger patients were more likely to receive mechanical ventilation. Future studies are indicated to elucidate mechanical ventilation strategies to optimize long-term outcomes after severe stroke.

Outcomes of endovascular mechanical thrombectomy and intravenous tissue plasminogen activator for the treatment of vertebrobasilar stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients requiring IV-tPA and/or mechanical thrombectomy for the treatment of posterior-circulation strokes suffer from high mortality rates. Increased age is associated with significantly higher mortality rates among posterior-circulation stroke patients who require mechanical thrombectomy. PMID: 24465258 [PubMed]

210 * contemporary approach of thoraco-abdominal aortic repair using moderate to deep hypothermia combined with target reconstruction of the adamkiewicz artery
Conclusion: Moderate to deep hypothermia combined with target reconstruction of the Adamkiewicz artery brings satisfactory outcomes in thoraco-abdominal aortic repair, especially for spinal cord protection.

293 * early and late outcome after surgery for acute type a aortic dissection in the elderly
Conclusion: Emergency surgery for ATAAD in elderly patients can be performed with acceptable early mortality and satisfactory intermediate survival. Preoperative acute neurological deficit predicts a worse outcome. Advanced age alone is not a contraindication to ATAAD repair.

Management of airway compromise following thyroid cyst hemorrhage after thrombolytic therapy
We present a case of a 62‐year‐old female with undiagnosed thyroid goiter who received tPA for acute ischemic stroke and developed acute airway compromise. The surgical airway response team was called due to inability to ventilate or intubate. An incision into the mass during attempted tracheotomy released colloid and blood, decompressing the airway and facilitating ventilation and intubation. Hemithyroidectomy for mass removal was delayed for 3 days to allow normalization of post‐tPA coagulopathy. Laryngoscope, 2014

Tracheostomy decannulation of patients with brain injury guided by flexible bronchoscope.
Conclusions: Safe patient care requires that various medical departments keep pace with the development of different specialities. To ensure early rehabilitation of patients with severe brain injury having tracheostomy, safe treatment and, if possible, decannulation should be performed. This procedure requires the involvement of a physician with bronchoscopy skills as well as the development of local protocols. Orv. Hetil., 2014, 155(28), 1108-1112. Utilization Of In-Hospital Palliative Care For Ischemic Stroke Deaths In United States (S45.005)
Conclusions:In-hospital palliative care is associated with more conservative resource utilization. Significant patient and hospital related differences exists in palliative care utilization for AIS deaths in United States. A growing concern over high cost associated with end of life care in United States is expected to affect the trend of offering and adopting in-hospital palliative services impacting health care finances and quality of care measures.Disclosure: Dr. Shreyansh has nothing to disclose. Tracheostomy Timing Affects Stroke Recovery
We examined the timing of tracheostomy on stroke patient outcomes across the United States using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (2008-2010). Independent samples t tests and chi-squared tests were used to make comparisons between early (≤10 days) and late (11-25 days) tracheostomy. Multivariable models, adjusted for confounding factors, investigated outcome measures. Results: In total, 13,165 stroke cases were included in the study (5591 in the ET group and 7574 in the LT group). Patients receiving an ET had a significant reduction in the odds of ventilator-associated pneumonia in comparison with the LT group (OR: .688,...
