The difficulty of studying race-ethnic stroke rehabilitation disparities in a community.
CONCLUSIONS: Initial agreement from rehabilitation providers to participate in research was excellent, but completion of study related data collection forms was sub-optimal suggesting this approach is not feasible for a future population-based stroke rehabilitation study. Further methods to study post-stroke rehabilitation disparities in communities are needed. PMID: 30187831 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association between caregiver engagement and patient-reported healthcare utilization after stroke: a mixed-methods study.
Conclusions: Higher rates of healthcare utilization by SSs with engaged CGs may be driven by greater stroke severity and greater need for services. Interestingly, the presence of an engaged CG did not facilitate more care for the SS after adjusting for stroke severity. PMID: 31483738 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A multifaceted continuing professional development intervention to move stroke rehabilitation guidelines into professional practice: A feasibility study.
Conclusion: This study demonstrated the feasibility of assessing the impact of a CPD intervention in stroke rehabilitation uptake and informed the design of a research program aimed at increasing the use of stroke evidence-based rehabilitation interventions. PMID: 31960782 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Physical activity in chronic home-living and sub-acute hospitalized stroke patients using objective and self-reported measures.
CONCLUSIONS: In HOM significantly more steps were performed and higher EE values were measured. However, participation in moderate activities and time spent on therapy were less in HOM. Evaluating PA with quantitative measures is feasible in both chronic home-living and sub-acute hospitalized patients with stroke. PMID: 26751778 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cost effectiveness of the occupation-based approach for subacute stroke patients: result of a randomized controlled trial.
CONCLUSIONS: The results show that the occupation-based approach is associated with significantly improved QALYs and has potential cost effectiveness, compared with the impairment-based approach. PMID: 28198661 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Wants Talk Psychotherapy but Cannot Talk: EMDR for Post-stroke Depression with Expressive Aphasia
CONCLUSION This is the first reported case demonstrating that EMDR can be effective for depression, even in those with severe expressive aphasia. In our case, there was no reluctance to disclose information, simply a neurological inability to do so. Through preparation, patience, perseverance, and plasticity (clinician flexibility, though perhaps also neuroplasticity), the patient’s PSD gradually improved, and she was able to reinvent her life within her limitations. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The authors gratefully acknowledge Eugene Schwartz, E.C. Hurley, and Mark Hubner for providing consultation during patient care. REFERENCES ...

Kelsey’s transformation: From stroke survivor to motivational speaker
“When I woke up after my stroke, all I wanted was to be normal again,” recalls Kelsey Tainsh. Normal — as in a healthy teen athlete who could brush her teeth and shower on her own, who wasn’t wheelchair-bound, who wasn’t compelled to hide her paralyzed right hand in her pocket everywhere she went, one who hadn’t lost all of her high school friends except for her two triplet sisters. Now, this world-champion athlete not only learned to walk and talk again but also to embrace her differences. “Our hardest obstacles can be our biggest opportunities,” she says. Kelsey’s first taste of being different came at ...
