The endogenous and exogenous brain-derived neurotrophic factor plays pivotal roles in the pathogenesis of stroke onset in high salt-loaded hypertensive rats.
Abstract Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is known to have neuroprotective effects on multiple neurovascular diseases especially poststroke recovery. On the other hand, BDNF reported to increase blood pressure (BP) which is one of the major risk factor for stroke onset. To clarify the conflicting effects on stroke onset, we examined the expression of endogenous BDNF in relation to stroke onset. In addition, we explored the effect of exogenous central BDNF against stroke onset and all-cause mortality as the primary endpoint and BP as the secondary object in hypertensive rats with high-salt diet. In experime...

A Descriptive Qualitative Study of Foreign Caregivers of Older Adult Stroke Survivors
This study aimed to explore and describe the experiences of Indonesian foreign caregivers, the largest migrant working population in Taiwan, who reside with and provide support to older adults with stroke and their families.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: By adopting a descriptive qualitative approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 Indonesian caregivers (mean age: 36 years) who were providing care to community-dwelling older stroke survivors (age ≥ 65 years) in Taiwan. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis.RESULTS: Six themes were constructed from the interviews: (1) foreign caregiver's background, ...

The longitudinal and dyadic effects of mutuality on perceived stress for stroke survivors and their spousal caregivers.
Conclusion: These findings highlight the interpersonal nature of stress in the context of caregiving for a spouse. Caregivers are especially influenced by perceived stress in the spousal relationship. Couples should be encouraged to focus on positive aspects of the caregiving relationship to mitigate stress. Stroke thrombolysis in England: an age stratified analysis of practice and outcome
Conclusion: treatment with rt-PA is now carried out frequently for older stroke patients in England. Their care is as timely as younger patients with no higher risk of major complication but mortality rates in older patients with stroke remain high.

Long-term morbidities in stroke survivors: a prospective multicenter study of Thai stroke rehabilitation registry
Conclusion: Long-term complications are common in stroke survivors. More than three-fourths of the patients developed at least one during the first year after rehabilitation. Strategies to prevent complications should be concerned especially on musculoskeletal pain which was the most common complaint. Physical complications at discharge period associated with psychological complications at 1 year followed up. More attention should be emphasized on patients age older than 60 years who were the major risk group for developing such complications.

Older people's attitudes towards resuming driving in the first four months post-stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: For the most part, driving was not a key consideration for participants during this phase of their recovery. Physical restrictions and confidence were seen as the main deterrent to driving post-stroke; however, this varied according to gender. Driving information is generally not retained in the first four weeks of recovery post-stroke. This has implications for the content and timing of driving information given post-stroke. Delayed atrophy in posterior cingulate cortex and apathy after stroke
ConclusionsThe present study suggests that delayed atrophic change is evident in the PCC 6 months after a stroke. There was greater apathetic change in the stroke patients with the larger volume reductions. The delayed atrophy of the PCC may reflect degeneration secondary to neuronal loss due to stroke. Such degeneration might have impaired control of goal‐directed behavior, leading to the observed increase in apathy. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Stroke with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter: a descriptive population-based study from the Brest stroke registry
The objective of the present prospective study, using data from 2008, was to evaluate the prevalence of AA (atrial fibrillation/flutter) in patients with stroke and the impact of implementing AF guidelines. Methods: The prevalence of AA was studied in patients diagnosed with stroke from January 1 to December 31, 2008 in the population-based Stroke Registry of Brest, France (total population, 363,760 according to the 2008 census, with 295,553 aged 15 years or older). Guidelines implementation was assessed in terms of antithrombotic therapy (VKA, antiplatelet agent, none), and the CHADS2 (Congestive heart failure, Hypertens...
