Association between polymorphisms in connexin 40 gene (Cx40) and risk of atrial fibrillation: a meta-analysis based on 3,452 subjects
CONCLUSIONS: The Cx40 polymorphisms were positively associated with AF in both populations, especially on -44 polymorphism.PMID:37382580 | DOI:10.1080/1354750X.2023.2227361

Effects of Conventional Speech Therapy with Liuzijue Qigong, a Traditional Chinese Method of Breath Training, in 70 Patients with Post-Stroke Spastic Dysarthria
CONCLUSIONS LQG, when combined with conventional speech therapy, enhanced the comprehensive speech ability of patients with PSSD compared with conventional treatment alone.PMID:37365796 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.939623

Epigenome-wide association study identifies novel genes associated with ischemic stroke
DNA methylation has previously been associated with ischemic stroke, but the specific genes and their functional roles in ischemic stroke remain to be determined. Here we aimed to identify differentially methy...

B-Type Natriuretic Peptide Can Distinguish Ischemic Stroke Subtypes Better than Other Cardiac Biomarkers
CONCLUSIONS Compared with other cardiac biomarkers, BNP is a better marker for the diagnosis of different subtypes of ischemic stroke. Routine screening for BNP in IS patients is recommended to improve the treatment decision-making process and minimize the time to thrombosis, thereby providing a more precise treatment for patients with different subtypes of stroke.PMID:37335813 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.939829

Effects of Pelvic Stabilization Training with Lateral and Posterior Tilt Taping on Pelvic Inclination, Muscle Strength, and Gait Function in Patients with Stroke: A Randomized Controlled Study
CONCLUSIONS: PPPT can significantly affect pelvic alignment and walking speed in patients with stroke, and the additional application of LPTT can further strengthen these effects. Therefore, we suggest using taping as an auxiliary therapeutic-intervention method in postural control training.PMID:37333857 | PMC:PMC10276765 | DOI:10.1155/2022/9224668

Use and misuse of random forest variable importance metrics in medicine: demonstrations through incident stroke prediction
Machine learning tools such as random forests provide important opportunities for modeling large, complex modern data generated in medicine. Unfortunately, when it comes to understanding why machine learning mode...

Timing of Postoperative Stroke and Risk of Mortality After Noncardiac Surgery: A Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative stroke tends to occur within 7 days following noncardiac surgery. Such timing of postoperative stroke carries a higher mortality risk, suggesting that targeted efforts to prevent stroke should focus on the first week following surgery to reduce the incidence and mortality associated with this complication. Our findings contribute to the growing understanding of stroke after noncardiac surgery and may help clinicians develop tailored perioperative neuroprotective strategies to prevent or improve treatment and outcomes of postoperative stroke.PMID:37303467 | PMC:PMC10251695 | DOI:10.14740/jocmr4877

Cerebral stroke mimics associated with spinal vascular disease: two case reports
We report two cases of cerebral stroke mimics to attract the attention of clinicians, especially emergency room doctors. In one case, a patient with spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) exhibited lower-right limb numbness and weakness. In the other, a patient with spinal cord infarction (SCI) had numbness and weakness of the lower-left limb. Both cases were misdiagnosed as cerebral strokes in the emergency room. One of the patients underwent hematoma removal surgery, and the other received medical treatment for spinal cord infarction. Patients' symptoms improved, but the sequelae remained. Single-limb numbness and w...

Recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (rt-PA) effectively restores neurological function and improves prognosis in acute ischemic stroke
CONCLUSION: Compared with conventional pharmacological regimens, additional rt-PA intravenous thrombolytic therapy improves the clinical outcome of patients with acute ischemic stroke, promotes neurological recovery, and enhances patient prognosis without increasing the risk of patient-related adverse events.PMID:37303683 | PMC:PMC10251022
