Adiponectin as a routine clinical biomarker.
Abstract Adiponectin is a protein synthesized and secreted predominantly by adipocytes into the peripheral blood. However, circulating adiponectin level is inversely related with body weight, especially visceral fat accumulation. The mechanism of this paradoxical relation remains obscure. Cerebrovascular risk factors seen in a university hospital.
CONCLUSIONS: The RF for ischemic stroke are multiple in the pediatric population, and some of them are associated with a specific age and type of stroke. The detection of these factors may help in the primary prevention of people at risk, an early diagnosis, and treatment and prevention of recurrences. Stat3 mediates LIF‐induced protection of astrocytes against toxic ROS by upregulating the UPC2 mRNA pool
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in various types of CNS damage, including stroke. We used a cultured astrocyte model to explore mechanisms of survival of CNS cells following ROS damage. We found that pretreatment with leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) preserves astrocytes exposed to toxic levels of t‐BHP by inhibiting an increase in intracellular ROS following t‐BHP treatment. Astrocytes lacking functional Stat3 did not benefit from the pro‐survival or antioxidant effects of LIF. Listeria monocytogenes Meningoencephalitis Mimicking Stroke in a Patient with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
Conclusion The supratentorial focal lesions secondary to Listeria meningoencephalitis are rare. The cases with focal neurological signs without fever at onset can resemble stroke.

Teaching NeuroImages: Methotrexate neurotoxicity: Resolution and evolution of MRI changes within 48 hours
A 13-year-old girl presented with acute-onset right hemiparesis involving the face, arm, and leg equally. She was receiving weekly intrathecal methotrexate (last dose 6 days prior) for recently diagnosed acute lymphocytic leukemia. Brain MRI (figure 1) showed diffusion restriction in the left centrum semiovale with reduced apparent diffusion coefficient. Her hemiparesis resolved within 24 hours but 2 hours later, she developed 12-hour left hemiparesis involving face, upper limb, and dysarthria. Follow-up neurologic examination was normal. Methotrexate induced leucoencephalopathy: A stroke mimic
We describe the case of a 17 year old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, who developed stroke like episodes on two consecutive challenges with a chemotherapeutic regime which included intravenous and intrathecal methotrexate. She had MRI changes consistent with acute ischemic stroke on both occasions. Her deficits recovered completely and spontaneously, as did the MRI changes. She did not have any further episodes when methotrexate was excluded from the chemotherapeutic regime.

Leukemia, All Cancer, and Acute Myocardial Infarction Risk by Industry and Occupation in 23 US States, 1999, 2003-2004, 2007
Between 4-20% of cancer, 5-10% of heart disease/stroke, and 10% respiratory/other chronic disease have been attributed to occupation, but timely US surveillance data are scarce. Timely data are needed to identify new, or confirm existing risks for occupational cancer and chronic disease death and trends within industrial sectors and special populations.

Hemiparesis and facial palsy caused by methotrexate.
We describe two teenagers, who during the implementation of the M phase of the protocol, suffered hemiparesis, facial paresis and dysarthria which quickly reversed. Leukemia involvement of the central nervous system and stroke, were ruled out. We briefly review the pathophysiology of methotrexate neurotoxicity, the characteristics of the focal paresis presentation and magnetic resonance image findings. Upregulation of myeloid cell leukemia-1 potentially modulates beclin-1-dependent autophagy in ischemic stroke in rats
Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that the expression of Mcl1 is involved in the survival of neuronal cells. In addition, the coexpression of Mcl1 with beclin-1 may attenuate beclin-1-dependent autophagy during ischemic stroke in rats.

Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia-Associated Thrombosis.
Abstract Patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) are prone to both bleeding and thrombosis. The bleeding complications are well known. In contrast, APL-associated thrombosis is relatively underappreciated. We aimed to explore the issue of APL-associated thrombosis events.
