[Risk factors for the development of early hyponatraemia in the premature infant. A review of the practice of giving sodium in the first days of life].
Romera Modamio G Abstract INTRODUCTION: A retrospective study was conducted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a tertiary hospital to determine the incidence of early hyponatraemia (first 48hours of life) in preterm infants. Risk and protection factors in this condition were also examined as a starting point for a change in the medical action when prescribing intravenous fluids. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included a sample of 256 premature babies (gestational age: 235-366) admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a tertiary hospital between January 2016 and June 2018. The number of patients r...

[Point-of-care ultrasound: Is it time to include it in the paediatric specialist training program?]
ez F, Bilbao-Sustacha JÁ, Oulego-Erroz I Abstract Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has become an essential tool for clinical practice in recent years. It should be considered as an extension of the standard physical examination, which complements and enriches it without substituting it. POCUS enables the physician to answer specific clinical questions about the diagnosis, to understand better the pathophysiological context, to orientate the treatment, and to perform invasive procedures more safely. Despite its current use in many centres, and in most paediatric sub-specialties, there are currently no specif...

[Sudden infant death syndrome: Do the parents follow the recommendations?]
The objective of this study is to describe the prevalence of prone position during sleep as well as other risk factors associated with SIDS in a sample of Spanish babies and infants. METHODS: Cross-sectional study carried out on 640 families with children from 0 months to 11 months. In addition to the sleep position, the adherence to four other recommendations regarding SIDS was analysed: place where infant sleeps, breastfeeding, use of non-nutritive suction, and maternal smoking. RESULTS: A total of 41.3% of infants under 6 months and 59.7% of infants aged 6 to 11 months slept in a non-recommended position. Only...

There are studies that associate the Doppler data with alterations in the intestinal flow of the newborn, but its relationship with intestinal oximetry has been little studied. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether there is a relationship between prenatal Doppler data and abdominal oximetry in small for gestational age neonates MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective observational study carried ou...

CONCLUSIONS: Radiography has a limited sensitivity for the diagnosis of toddler's fracture. In the group of patients with normal radiography, the use of ultrasound can be helpful to the diagnosis and avoid additional radiation. [Position Statement From The Spanish Association Of Paediatrics Medicines Committee Concerning The Use Of Alternative Medicine And Pseudo-Science In Children].
nco S, Escrig Fernández R, Calvo C Abstract Currently, there are some therapies that are being practiced without adjusting to the available scientific evidence. The terminology is confusing, encompassing terms such as "alternative medicine", "natural medicine", "complementary medicine", "pseudoscience" or "pseudo-therapies". The Medicines Committee of the Spanish Association of Paediatrics considers that no health professional should recommend treatments not supported by scientific evidence. Also, diagnostic and therapeutic actions should be always based on ...

[Recommendations for vaccination against ROTAvirus in PREMature newborns (ROTAPREM)].
(SENeo) y del Comité Asesor de Vacunas de la Asociación Española de Pediatría (CAV-AEP) Abstract Rotavirus (RV) is the leading cause of severe acute gastroenteritis in infants worldwide. Most children are infected by RV by the age of 5years, and especially in the first 2years. Two oral attenuated vaccines against RV are licensed in industrialised countries, which have proven to be safe and effective against the disease. The main objective of these vaccines has been to reproduce the natural history of infection and protect against severe disease in the first months of life. Preterm infan...

[Management and serious risk factors associated with unintentional injuries in paediatric emergencies in Spain].
CONCLUSION: In Spain, most UIs are not serious. X-rays and immobilisation of extremities are the most frequently performed tests and procedures. Severe UIs were associated with individual factors, such as age>5years or history of fracture, and with sports activity as a mechanism associated with severity. It is vital to implement measures to improve the prevention of these injuries and to support the training of caregivers through educational programmes. [Newborn screening for metabolic disorders in Spain and worldwide].
ilde;o D, Rocha H Abstract Newborn screening programs are key players in a country's public health strategies, preventing the burden of care associated with the screened disorders. Its importance has dramatically intensified in recent years due to the increasing number of disorders that fulfil criteria for screening. Since the 1960's, many countries implemented newborn screening programs that are now, at least in developed countries, universal, well established, and with excellent results. Nevertheless, much work is still to be done, mainly in developing countries of Africa, Asia, and South America. In some Europe...

trico (GEEDP) de la AEP Abstract The Spanish Group for Children's Pain Study was created in 2017 in an aim to prevent, remove or reduce pain in neonates, infants, children, and adolescents. Along with a diagnosis of pain, a paediatric patient may suffer from acute or chronic pain, neuropathic, nociceptive, or mixed pain, as well as pain from procedures, and post-surgical pain. Pain suffering is too often ignored and not diagnosed. As a result of this, pain prevention and pain treatment fails. Acute pain prevalence in scientific literature is estimated to be between 22% (procedures pain) and 77% (pain on patients i...
