Health disparities and stroke: the influence of insurance status on the prevalence of patient safety indicators and hospital-acquired conditions.
CONCLUSIONS Insurance status is an independent predictor of patient safety events after stroke. Private insurance is associated with lower mortality, shorter lengths of stay, and improved clinical outcomes. PMID: 25658779 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

National trends in utilization of Intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular treatment in acute ischemic stroke (P5.044)
Conclusions:At national level, use of intravenous rt-PA is increasing among all groups proving positive impact of the efforts by organizations and patient education. Given endovascular treatment has now become standard of care; we need to create stroke care models to target this most vulnerable subset of patient population including Hispanics, patients residing in rural areas and insurance status like Medicaid or self-pay status to provide them similar and equal opportunities of treatment as others.Disclosure: Dr. Khatri has nothing to disclose. Factors Associated With Length of Hospitalization in Patients Admitted With Transient Ischemic Attack in United States Clinical Sciences

Utilization Of In-Hospital Palliative Care For Ischemic Stroke Deaths In United States (S45.005)
Conclusions:In-hospital palliative care is associated with more conservative resource utilization. Significant patient and hospital related differences exists in palliative care utilization for AIS deaths in United States. A growing concern over high cost associated with end of life care in United States is expected to affect the trend of offering and adopting in-hospital palliative services impacting health care finances and quality of care measures.Disclosure: Dr. Shreyansh has nothing to disclose. Abstract 009: The Impact of Participation in a Telestroke Network on In-hospital Mortality in Georgia Session Title: Abstract Oral Session: General
Conclusions: Acute ischemic stroke patients admitted in hospitals participating in a telestroke program had a more pronounced reduction in in-hospital mortality. However, telestroke coverage did not alter the effect of nighttime admission on in-hospital mortality.

Can You Think Yourself Into A Different Person?
For years she had tried to be the perfect wife and mother but now, divorced, with two sons, having gone through another break-up and in despair about her future, she felt as if she’d failed at it all, and she was tired of it. On 6 June 2007 Debbie Hampton, of Greensboro, North Carolina, took an overdose of more than 90 pills – a combination of ten different prescription drugs, some of which she’d stolen from a neighbor’s bedside cabinet. That afternoon, she’d written a note on her computer: “I’ve screwed up this life so bad that there is no place here for me and nothing I can contr...

Carotid Endarterectomy National Trends Over A Decade: Does Sex Matter?
The objective was to evaluate the difference in timing (if any) of in-hospital carotid endarterectomy (CEA) or outcomes of CEA based on sex among men and women hospitalized for carotid artery disease. Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample Database. All patients from 2000–2009 who underwent CEA during their hospitalization were examined. International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision codes were used to identify patients who underwent CEA during hospitalization, stratify asymptomatic and symptomatic patients, determine time in days from admission to CEA, and ex...

Abstract 072: Impact of Chronic Diabetes on Periprocedural Outcomes Among Patient With Atrial Fibrillation and Flutter Who Underwent Radiofrequency Catheter Ablation Therapy (RFA). Report From the NIS 2014. Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusions: RFA has a similar procedural safety in diabetics when compared to non-diabetic patients. It remains a safe procedure in diabetics with drug-refractory atrial fibrillation and flutter. Renal failure, CHF, type of Insurance, hospital location and teaching status are predictors of complications after RFA.

Conclusion: This novel technology discriminates and quantifies subtle differences in behavior and neurological impairments in subjects afflicted with neurological injury/disease. KINARM assessments can be incorporated into multi-center trials (e.g., monitoring stroke motor recovery: NCT02928393). Further studies will determine if KINARM Labs can demonstrate a clinical effect with fewer subjects over a shorter trial period. Disclosures/funding: Dr. Stephen Scott is the inventor of KINARM and CSO of BKIN Technologies.   Multiplexed mass spectrometry assay identifies neurodegeneration biomarkers in CSF Presenter: Chelsky...

Save Time With These Tips for Making Documentation Easier
Speech-language pathologists have a pretty sweet gig, am I right? We get to spend our working hours immersed in myriad rewarding tasks like teaching new moms to safely feed their precious babies, helping families learn strategies to communicate with their children and helping people who have had a stroke regain their voices. And when our day of using our communication superpowers for the greater good is through? We get to sit in front of a computer for hours and write about it. Not in an “I love this work and want to chronicle my experiences” sort of way. More in a “this tedious, painstaking documentation somehow bec...

COVID-19 Exposed the Faults in America ’s Elder Care System. This Is Our Best Shot to Fix Them
For the American public, one of the first signs of the COVID-19 pandemic to come was a tragedy at a nursing home near Seattle. On Feb. 29, 2020, officials from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Washington State announced the U.S. had its first outbreak of the novel coronavirus. Three people in the area had tested positive the day before; two of them were associated with Life Care Center of Kirkland, and officials expected more to follow soon. When asked what steps the nursing home could take to control the spread, Dr. Jeff Duchin, health officer for Seattle and King County, said he was working w...

Readmissions in patients with Cerebral Cavernous Malformations (CCMs): a National Readmission Database (NRD) study
CONCLUSIONS: All identified comorbidities associated with increased risks of readmission contribute to vascular stress, suggesting its role in lesion pathogenesis. This is the first and only study to analyze readmission metrics for CCMs in order to identify high risk patient factors to date.PMID:34763395 | DOI:10.23736/S0390-5616.21.05605-8
