Abstract 301: Healthcare Costs Following Stroke and Major Bleeding Events in Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation Patients Session Title: Poster Session III
Conclusions: NVAF patients who have a stroke or MB event incur higher healthcare costs relative to patients without events. Interventions preventing stroke or MB events have the potential to reduce the healthcare burden associated NVAF.

High Levels of Soluble Lectin-Like Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein Receptor-1 in Acute Stroke: An Age- and Sex-Matched Cross-Sectional Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Higher levels of sLOX-1 were observed in patients with acute stoke than in controls. High levels of sLOX-1 can be useful as biomarker for acute stroke. PMID: 27025681 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

EMS and Acute Stroke Care: Evidence for Policies to Reduce Delays to Definitive Treatments
Abstract Tremendous advances have altered the management of stroke over the past two decades. In a landmark paper in 1995, intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) was shown to improve outcomes in stroke patients when compared with the standard treatment at the time. Municipalities around the country created destination plans for their EMS systems to direct stroke patients to an appropriate stroke center and therefore prevent the costly time delays associated with interfacility transports. When properly identified as a stroke by EMS, studies show that EMS prenotification to the hospital leads to faster in-h...

Atrial fibrillation and risk of stroke: a nationwide cohort study
Conclusions Stroke/TE/TIA risk was particularly increased when prior stroke/TE/TIA was present. Atrial fibrillation is associated with an increase in risk of stroke/TE/TIA in the absence of other risk factors but only a moderate increase in risk when other risk factors are present.

Left Atrial Appendage Closure: Is the Strategy Enough to Lower Long-Term Stroke Risk?
AbstractPurpose of ReviewLeft atrial appendage closure (LAAC) emerged as a promising site-directed therapy to mitigate stroke risk in patients ineligible for long-term oral anticoagulation. We sought to summarize the current evidence regarding the role of LAAC on long-term risk of ischemic stroke and systemic thromboembolism.Recent FindingsData from EWOLUTION registry provides real world evidence on the 1-year outcomes of LAAC by WATCHMAN device. The annual ischemic stroke rate was 1.1 per 100 patient-years, as opposed to the CHADS2VASC score-predicted stroke rate of 7.2% (84% relative risk reduction). No differences in de...

Community Interventions to Increase Stroke Preparedness and Acute Stroke Treatment Rates
AbstractPurpose of ReviewAcute stroke treatments reduce the risk of post-stroke disability. These treatments, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and intra-arterial treatment, are highly time-dependent; thus, one of the main barriers to treatment is pre-hospital delay. Stroke preparedness is defined as the ability to recognize stroke symptoms and the intent to activate emergency medical services (EMS). This review describes types of acute stroke treatment and preparedness interventions, including recent mass media interventions to increase acute stroke treatment rates, and adult and youth community interventions to increase...

Prestroke Aspirin Use is Associated with Clinical Outcomes in Ischemic Stroke Patients with Atherothrombosis, Small Artery Disease, and Cardioembolic Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: PA use may reduce initial stroke severity in AT stroke and the risk of END, and can improve functional outcome at three months irrespective of stroke subtypes. PMID: 30429408 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk of stroke subsequent to infective endocarditis: A nationwide study
ConclusionPatients with non-surgically treated IE with a stroke during IE admission were at significant higher associated risk of subsequent stroke within the first year of follow-up as compared with patients without a stroke during IE admission. This risk difference was not evident beyond one year of discharge. These findings underline the need for identification of causes and mechanisms of recurrent strokes after IE to develop preventive means.

Circulating Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 and Risk of Stroke: A Meta-Analysis of Population-Based Studies Involving 17,180 Individuals.
CONCLUSIONS: Higher circulating levels of MCP-1 are associated with increased long-term risk of stroke. Our findings along with genetic and experimental evidence suggest that MCP-1-signaling might represent a therapeutic target to lower stroke risk. PMID: 31476962 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Is paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia truly benign? Insightful association between PSVT and stroke from a National Inpatient Database Study
ConclusionsPSVT is independently associated with higher prevalence of embolic stroke but not with overall ischemic stroke. Patients with embolic stroke in the presence of PSVT have worse in-hospital outcomes with increased mortality.

Atrial Septal Aneurysm may Cause In-Hospital Recurrence of Cryptogenic Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: The CHALLENGE ESUS/CS registry indicated that ASA was not rare in cryptogenic stroke, and ASA's clinical characteristics included higher age, reduced frequency of diabetes mellitus, and increased frequency of concomitant right-to-left shunt. ASA may be related to in-hospital stroke recurrence in cryptogenic stroke. PMID: 32684557 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The contribution of plasma uric acid to the risk of stroke in hypertensive populations.
CONCLUSIONS: High UA level could significantly increase stroke risk in female hypertensive patients. Female hypertensive patients may benefit from managing UA at normal levels for stroke prevention. PMID: 32790821 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prevalence and Risk Factors of High-Risk Population for Stroke: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Survey in Southwestern China
Front Neurol. 2022 Mar 2;13:693894. doi: 10.3389/fneur.2022.693894. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTWith the aging of the population and the change of lifestyle in China, the prevalence and risk factors of the high-risk population for stroke may change. However, few studies performed community-based high-risk stroke population surveys in China. Hence, we performed this multicenter, cross-sectional, and community-based survey in Sichuan of southwestern China, according to the China National Stroke Screening Survey (CNSSS) program in 2015. The residents aged ≥ 40 years volunteered to participate in the face-to-face survey in 8 co...

Giant cell arteritis-related stroke in a large inception cohort: A comparative study
CONCLUSIONS: The location of stroke and assessment of ECU results and CRP level could help improve the prognosis of GCA-related stroke by bringing this condition to the clinician's attention more quickly, thus shortening diagnostic delay.PMID:35512621 | DOI:10.1016/j.semarthrit.2022.152020

Methods for stroke severity assessment by chart review in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study
Sci Rep. 2022 Jul 19;12(1):12338. doi: 10.1038/s41598-022-16522-7.ABSTRACTStroke severity is the most important predictor of post-stroke outcome. Most longitudinal cohort studies do not include direct and validated measures of stroke severity, yet these indicators may provide valuable information about post-stroke outcomes, as well as risk factor associations. In the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, stroke severity data were retrospectively collected, and this paper outlines the procedures used and shares them as a model for assessment of stroke severity in other large epidemiologic studies. Trained physic...
