Long-term outcomes of ischaemic stroke patients with diabetes in a multi-ethnic cohort in Singapore
CONCLUSION: Our study provides quantitative data on the event rates of ischaemic stroke patients with diabetes. These findings provide insights on stroke predictors in a multi-ethnic Asian population, which may have implications in the design of future interventional studies.PMID:33623954 | DOI:10.47102/annals-acadmedsg.2020105

Elderly Stroke Rehabilitation: Overcoming the Complications and Its Associated Challenges.
Authors: Lui SK, Nguyen MH Abstract There have been many advances in management of cerebrovascular diseases. However, stroke is still one of the leading causes of disabilities and mortality worldwide with significant socioeconomic burden. This review summarizes the consequences of stroke in the elderly, predictors of stroke rehabilitation outcomes, role of rehabilitation in neuronal recovery, importance of stroke rehabilitation units, and types of rehabilitation resources and services available in Singapore. We also present the challenges faced by the elderly stroke survivors in the local setting and propose strate...

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hyperacute stroke treatment: experience from a comprehensive stroke centre in Singapore
AbstractThe Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is rapidly evolving and affecting healthcare systems across the world. Singapore has escalated its alert level to Disease Outbreak Response System Condition (DORSCON) Orange, signifying severe disease with community spread. We aimed to study the overall volume of AIS cases and the delivery of hyperacute stroke services during DORSCON Orange. This was a single-centre, observational cohort study performed at a comprehensive stroke centre responsible for AIS cases in the western region of Singapore, as well as providing care for COVID-19 patients. All AIS patients revie...

IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 8962: Current Update on the Clinical Utility of MMSE and MoCA for Stroke Patients in Asia: A Systematic Review
Conclusion: Clinicians in Asia are strongly recommended to consider the education level of stroke patients when interpreting the results of the MMSE and MoCA. Further studies in other Asian countries are needed to understand their clinical value in stroke settings.

Challenges and Opportunities in Stroke Nursing Research: Global Views From a Panel of Nurse Researchers
This article reflects panel insights on challenges and opportunities for nurse-led stroke research. DISCUSSION: The research challenges discussed include nursing independence, the processes of informed consent and randomization process, obtaining adequate independent funding, recruiting research subjects, and working with vulnerable groups. The major opportunities to leverage and improve stroke nursing research include facilitating the nurse investigator role, information digitalization, improving health literacy, and collaboration between nurse researchers. SUMMARY: We are living in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and amb...

Acute kidney injury without need for dialysis, incidence, its impact on long-term stroke survival and progression to chronic kidney disease
Conclusions We found AKI during stroke admission was associated with increased mortality as compared with those without AKI on univariate analysis. AKI without need of renal replacement therapy was also associated with progression to CKD in this cohort. This suggests that patients with AKI need to have their renal function monitored longitudinally for development of CKD.

Qualitative study exploring heterogeneity in caregiving experiences post-stroke in Singapore
Conclusion Our findings illustrated the heterogeneity in factors affecting caregiving experience across spouse and adult-child caregivers. Practical implications include conducting a needs assessment for caregiver-stroke survivor dyads and providing tailored support, training and information to help caregivers cope better.

Predictors of functional outcome in patients with stroke thrombolysis in a tertiary hospital in Malaysia.
CONCLUSION: Our newly developed Malaysian IV rt-PA service is safe, with similar outcomes to the published literature. Functional outcome after thrombolysis was associated with baseline NIHSS scores and DM. PMID: 30488077 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Inactive bowel movement and stroke are associated with increased risks of mild cognitive impairment among community-living Singapore elderly.
Abstract Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), as a preclinical phase of dementia, provides an invaluable time window for intervention. Besides several proposed modifiable risk factors, the associations of MCI with dietary habits and bowel movement are not well clarified. We thus conducted a cross-sectional study of community-living Singapore elderly and focused on the relationship of clinically diagnosed MCI with dietary habits and bowel movement frequencies. The multiple logistic regression results showed that frequent (≥4 days per week) fruit consumption (P = 0.004), active (≥4 days per week) bowel movement with...

Stroke Rehabilitation Use and Caregiver Psychosocial Health Profiles in Singapore: A Latent Profile Transition Analysis
To identify and describe caregiver profiles based on their psychosocial health characteristics over a 12-month period and transitions among these profiles, to determine if stroke rehabilitation use at 12  months post-stroke differed by caregiver profile transition patterns, and to investigate if caregiver profiles at 3 months post-stroke moderate the association of stroke rehabilitation use at 3 months and 12 months post-stroke after accounting for covariates.

The effect of body mass index on inpatient rehabilitation outcome after stroke in an East-Asian cohort: a prospective study
CONCLUSION: Findings from this study unequivocally support the benefits of acute inpatient stroke rehabilitation. Patients in the obese BMI range tended to normalise during rehabilitation. BMI, whether underweight, normal, or overweight was not correlated with discharge FIM.PMID:34717300 | DOI:10.11622/smedj.2021190
