Adherence to positive airway pressure therapy initiated in the early subacute phase of ischemic stroke: a PRESS study follow-up
ConclusionsLess than half of the stroke subjects remained adherent to PAP therapy at 6  months post-PAP initiation. Special attention to support adaptation and adherence to PAP treatment is needed in this group of patients.

Functional recovery after ischemic stroke: Impact of different sleep health parameters
J Sleep Res. 2023 Jun 20:e13964. doi: 10.1111/jsr.13964. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSleep disturbances after ischaemic stroke include alterations of sleep architecture, obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, daytime sleepiness and insomnia. Our aim was to explore their impacts on functional outcomes at month 3 after stroke, and to assess the benefit of continuous positive airway pressure in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea. Ninety patients with supra-tentorial ischaemic stroke underwent clinical screening for sleep disorders and polysomnography at day 15 ± 4 after stroke in a multisite study. Pati...

Up-to-date advance in the relationship between OSA and stroke: a narrative review
ConclusionBoth the onset and recurrence of stroke closely correlated with OSA, but the specific mechanisms remain unclear. Further studies should be carried out to explore effective treatments in patients with stroke and OSA.

SOS score: an optimized score to screen acute stroke patients for obstructive sleep apnea
Conclusions: The SOS score administered to relatives of stroke patients is a useful tool to screen for OSA and may decrease the need for PSG in acute stroke setting.

Lack of repercussions of sleep apnea syndrome on recovery and attention disorders at the subacute stage after stroke: A study of 45 patients
This study did not demonstrate the supposed repercussions of SAS on the recovery or attentional abilities of post-stroke patients. The tests were maybe given too early; they should take place at a lengthier time interval after the stroke, and also to be more complete.

Simplifying the Diagnosis of Sleep Apnea after Stroke: Evaluation of Five Simple Screening Tools (S53.007)
CONCLUSIONS: Our preliminary results suggest that the 4V may be a useful tool to screen for OSA within 90 days after stroke. This tool may assist in determining which patients would most benefit from further evaluation and treatment for OSA early after stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Frakul has nothing to disclose. Observational Study of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Wake-Up Stroke: The SLEEP TIGHT Study
Conclusions: WUS may be associated with severe OSA with more oxygen desaturation in men but not in women. WUS may be associated with high DBP and increased LDL cholesterol.Cerebrovasc Dis 2016;41:233-241

Effect of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure on Stroke Rehabilitation: A Pilot Randomized Sham-Controlled Trial
Conclusions:A sham-controlled CPAP trial among stroke rehabilitation patients was feasible in terms of recruitment, treatment without diagnostic testing and adequate blinding—though was limited by study retention and CPAP adherence. Despite these limitations, a trend towards a benefit of CPAP on recovery was evident. Tolerance and adherence must be improved before the full benefits of CPAP on recovery can be assessed in larger trials.Citation:Khot SP, Davis AP, Crane DA, Tanzi PM, Li Lue D, Claflin ES, Becker KJ, Longstreth WT, Watson NF, Billings ME. Stroke Epidemiology and Risk Factor Management
This article reviews the current recommendations for the management of each of these modifiable risk factors. Recent Findings: It has been documented that some blood pressure medications may increase variability of blood pressure and ultimately increase the risk for stroke. Stroke prevention typically includes antiplatelet therapy (unless an indication for anticoagulation exists), so the most recent evidence supporting use of these drugs is reviewed. In addition, emerging risk factors, such as obstructive sleep apnea, electronic cigarettes, and elevated lipoprotein (a), are discussed. Summary: Overall, secondary stroke p...
