Altered Properties of Neurons and Astrocytes and the Effects of Food Components in Stroke-Prone Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats
In this study, we obtained information using PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science. We searched for the functions of neurons and astrocytes and the molecular mechanism of ischemic stroke induction. We summarized the recent literature on the underlying mechanisms of stroke onset in SHRSP and the alleviating effects of typical food-derived phytochemical components. Neuronal death in SHRSP is induced by hypoxia-reoxygenation, suggesting the involvement of oxidative stress. Furthermore, the production of lactate, l-serine, and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor in SHRSP-derived astrocytes was reduced compared with...

Curcumin protects against hypertension aggravated retinal ischemia/reperfusion in a rat stroke model.
The objective of this study was to explore retinal damage in stroke spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and evaluate the role of curcumin in the retinal injury after stroke. Mature male SHR were used as the animal model for hypertension and age-matched male Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats as the normotensive controls. The rat model of stroke was made by bilateral vertebral artery electrocoagulation combined with transient bilateral common carotid artery ligation. The animals were randomly divided into sham group, ischemia/reperfusion group, solvent control group, and curcumin treatment group. Each group was subdivided into 2 h, ...

Epigenetic impact of curcumin on stroke prevention
Abstract The epigenetic impact of curcumin in stroke and neurodegenerative disorders is curiosity-arousing. It is derived from Curcuma longa (spice), possesses anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-lipidemic, neuro-protective and recently shown to exhibit epigenetic modulatory properties. Epigenetic studies include DNA methylation, histone modifications and RNA-based mechanisms which regulate gene expression without altering nucleotide sequences. Curcumin has been shown to affect cancer by altering epigenetic changes but its role as an epigenetic agent in cerebral stroke has not been much explored. Although cur...

Therapeutic targets of neuroprotection and neurorestoration in ischemic stroke: Applications for natural compounds from medicinal herbs
Biomed Pharmacother. 2022 Feb 12;148:112719. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2022.112719. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeuroprotective and neurorestorative therapy represent two major drug intervention strategies for ischemic stroke. Multiple factors such as excitotoxicity, inflammation, angiogenesis, and neurogenesis are the main pathological processes that underlie acute and chronic ischemic brain injury. Furthermore, their intimate interactions mediate blood-brain barrier permeability, increase neurovascular unit structural damage as well as a hemorrhagic transformation during ischemic stroke. We aimed to review the current unde...

Curcumin ameliorates ischemic stroke injury in rats by protecting the integrity of the blood-brain barrier
Exp Ther Med. 2021 Jul;22(1):783. doi: 10.3892/etm.2021.10215. Epub 2021 May 19.ABSTRACTThe blood-brain barrier (BBB) is critical for proper cerebral homeostasis and its dysfunction during ischemic stroke can result in significant neurological injury. The major goal of the present study was to identify whether curcumin pretreatment possessed protective effects on BBB integrity during the 24 h of acute ischemic brain injury. To investigate the protective effects of curcumin, male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into multiple groups, including sham, middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) vehicle and curcumin ...

Curcumin protects neural cells against ischemic injury in N2a cells and mouse brain with ischemic stroke
ConclusionCurcumin promotes neuron survival in vivo and in vitro to exert neuroprotective effects against ischemia injury. Moreover, our results for the first time demonstrated curcumin inhibited ischemia‐induced mitochondrial apoptosis via restricting Bax activation, which may be one of the possible mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective effects of curcumin. Curcumin prevents strokes in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats by improving vascular endothelial function
Antioxidants have shown great promise in stroke prevention. Diarylheptanoids (also known as diphenylheptanoids) are a small class of plant secondary metabolites that possess antioxidant activity greater than t...

Curcumin-loaded nanoemulsion improves haemorrhagic stroke recovery in wistar rats.
Abstract Cerebrovascular diseases are currently a major global health problem. Considering the limitations of current therapy, the search for new alternatives for the treatment of these diseases is necessary and, in this context, curcumin, a molecule that has neuroprotective properties already described in the literature. A limiting factor when considering therapies for the nervous tissue is the presence of the blood-brain barrier which stimulates the search for new drug delivery strategies. In this context, nanoencapsulation seems to be a promising alternative. In this work, we compared the protective effects of ...

A Comorbid Rat Model of Neuroendocrine-Immune System Alterations Under the Impact of Risk Factors for Stroke
Front Aging Neurosci. 2022 Jan 20;13:827503. doi: 10.3389/fnagi.2021.827503. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTHypercholesterolemia and carotid atherosclerosis contribute to the etiology of stroke. However, there has been a lack of appropriate comorbid animal models incorporating some of the ubiquitous characteristics that precede strokes. Curcumin is a natural active polyphenolic compound extracted from the rhizoma of Curcuma longa L. which possesses comprehensive bioactivities. The present study aimed to evaluate whether neurobehavioral deficits, neuroendocrine-immune dysregulations and cerebral microcirculation dysfunction, are ...
